The realm of the Shadow Stage is constantly beset by unreality on all sides. To prevent their world from unravelling, its inhabitants - the Thespians - must constantly put on plays, acting out story after story in order to counter uncreation with creation.

The individual - or rather, individuals now known as the Dissonant were conscripted by the Narrator, the absolute ruler of the Stage, to play a classic "multiple personalities serial killer." It was a role neither of them enjoyed, but neither of them dared challenge it while he was in charge. After he was ousted, they cast off the role at last, and became instead a sort of wandering storyteller and historian, traveling from realm to realm, trading stories of the Stage for stories of others’ worlds.

The Dissonant is actually a plural system - not one person, but multiple people sharing a single body. It's why they use plural pronouns such as "we," "us," and "our." The name "the Dissonant" doesn't refer to a single person in their collective, but is more like a team or family name. They each have their own names, which they use mostly with each other and people who know them.

The two people who comprise the collective are the Cleric and the Beast. They look after the system's outer life together, and despite their past, are very close.

With people they don't know as well, they tend to be rather private. They'll still use plural pronouns in reference to themselves and will explain that they are plural, but they won't mention who's at front or talk much about their inner life or personal history. They'll also act more professional and distant, like many people do at their jobs. It becomes harder to tell who's who when they're in "work mode," but it's still possible if you pay attention and know them well enough.

Thespians in general tend not to show their faces or tell their name-names to people unless they're very close, but the collective behind the Dissonant is especially secretive. Even with those close to them, they avoid showing their body's face and have never told anyone their birth name. To them, their body's face is simply another mask; their birth name, simply a lie.

They are generally pretty functional. They do have occasional memory issues that get much worse with stress, so they keep records when they can. They also have derealization spells, but are used to them by now.

No one except them knows why they're plural, and anyone who asks gets a variant of "it's none of your business."

Additional note: If you want to draw them, go ahead! I'm flattered! But please, don't portray them as deranged, murderous, or anything else along that line. Like most irl plurals, they're perfectly decent and reasonable people who would rather not be stereotyped. ;v;
