A soft spoken and gentle soul, Marie tends to go with the flow and lets herself be at fate's mercy. She has strong diplomatic and conversational skills, and prefers to reach amicable solutions. She's selfless, considering others needs before her own. While she's very down to earth and friendly, she takes a firm but fair stance when it comes to residing over her province. While not easily overwhelmed, she prefers to keep to herself, as she's a bit of an introvert by nature. She's intelligent, able to articulate herself well, and very level-headed. Marie is a generous person. She's humble, occasionally absentminded, and tends to follow more wishful thinking than logical, but overall she conducts her position as duchess very admirably.

Marie has a very relaxed life. She wants for little, is surrounded by beauty, and has a fulfilling duty to uphold. She grew up rather ordinarily for others in her position - intensive education, learning her duties from a young age, and being made ready for the future her parents decreed. In fact, most of her life was set out for her before she'd even learned to walk. After all, as the only child to a duke and duchess, she'd have big shoes to grow into, and her parents weren't about to bring shame to their name by having an unprepared successor. Thankfully, Marie excelled in the path laid out for her. She learned quickly, and found herself to have quite an affinity for her duties. Of course, this path probably wasn't one she would have picked personally, but she doesn't mind it either. After all, it allowed her to do something important and it came with many perks she enjoyed, such as her beloved garden.
Her life was truly laid out for her down to the letter, though. Her parents had even selected a suitor for her. With her docile and friendly nature, though, she actually took quite a liking to her pair, and he grew affection for her as well. Everything proceeded as though it were fate, meant to be, like a fairytale fantasy. Marie was so deeply, utterly in love all the way down the aisle and to the altar of their wedding, so very ready to say "I do" and to seal their union with a kiss, so very ready to have a life with this person... until a loud crack rang out in the wedding pavilion, and her fiancé dropped dead to the floor.
It's true that love is blind, or at least in this case. While her fiancé had no problems with anyone from an outside perspective, those close to his family would know that this wasn't quite the case... He'd had quite the betting attitude, and he'd become less and less able to pay his dues. It was only a matter of time before someone got tired of waiting, and he'd thought marriage was the answer to getting the money he needed. Alas, he wasn't fast enough. Marie was left feeling as though the whole ordeal was her fault, as she hadn't known anything of his debts, and the general sentiment throughout the province was that Marie must be horribly unlucky. What a terribly unlucky tragedy it was to have one's fiancé die at the altar! While no one would dare say it aloud, the conclusion the masses pushed through the rumor mill was that it was somehow Marie's fault, that she was cursed, and that anyone who falls in love with her would be doomed to the same fate. Marie, suffering from the heartbreak of her terrible loss, was inclined to believe the rumors. She became withdrawn, spending all of her free time alone in her garden, vowing to never love again, feeling that it would be selfish of her to do so.
As a duchess, Marie resides over the Province of Wisteria, which is known for its beauty and bounty year-round. The territory is sheltered from conflict by powerful allies, affording it peace and prosperity in its own right. Though the province used to be under the rule of the tyrant king Silvain, he has long since disappeared, allowing the entire kingdom to flourish in these more modern times. While dainties exist in this world, they are uncommon, and seeing one is said to be a sign of good luck. While noble lineage is still recognized and prized, it isn't as important or as focal as it used to be.
