About

"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet."

Despite their namesake, Kali is a mere mortal. Kali is not their given name, but rather one chosen when they were a teenager and wanted a name that better reflected how they felt, particularly the image of the aggressive Black man (or "fiery" Black woman) versus their true nature as a geek and an athlete who loves their family and girlfriend. They do not identify with any particular religious tradition but do practice Buddhist meditation and participate in the Indian cultural festivals and family rituals instigated by their mother, who is Hindu. They have never visited India, but do want to go at some point in their life.

Kali is a serious person, but definitely has a soft side. It took them a few years to learn how to be affectionate with their girlfriends, especially publicly, but now they have no problem holding hands or kissing their girlfriend. Their love of the sci-fi (particularly afro-futurism) and fantasy genres is something that they try to keep on the down-low, mainly due to many sour encounters with men who do not want "SJWs" in their communities. With Anna's help, however, they found a small group of other queer nerds of color and now they play D&D twice a month, and every year when the Renaissance Faire arrives, Kali and their friends join other SCA actors/actresses. (They're properly trained as a two-handed sword wielder.) They're surprisingly easily flustered and rub their arms when Anna says something cheesy and sweet. They matured quickly as a teen, more emotionally than physically, and started to take on more responsibilities around the house and even helped their father with his start-up business before they left for college.

History

Growing up in the city but being middle class gave them an interesting outlook on life. Their public school was mediocre at best and they were quickly disillusioned with the educational system as a whole, culminating in an ideology of doing average but never really applying themselves. Most of their energy went into sports; they played basketball with the neighborhood kids at the park and in the summer trekked out to the suburbs to join the community soccer team, which was always their favorite time of year. Puberty was when they began to question their identity, but it wasn't until they were around sixteen that they found the right word to describe themselves. Their coming out went suprisingly well, with only a few mishaps and confusion about pronouns from their immediate family. Though school was riskier, their size and reputation (at the time, they were an amateur boxer) kept the bullies away. In their senior year of high school, they were approached by a scout at a soccer tournament and it was suggested that they apply for athletic scholarships for college. Although they had no real interest in college, their father convinced them to apply. By graduation, they were accepted by an in-state university a few hours away.

The few months between applying to college and graduating high school had not been enough time for them to pick a major. They spent the first two years of their college career bouncing between different disciplines in search of something that interested them. But when an injury cost them their scholarship, there was no reason for them to stay in school and they dropped out halfway through their third year to move back home. Their parents, while disappointed that they had dropped out, were supportive of them and allowed them to stay at home for a couple of years as they worked two jobs and saved up money for an apartment of their own.

Relationships

Anastasia Kozlov

Their long-time girlfriend, Kali is desperately in love with Anna. They're her rock, and she is theirs. Anna can make them flustered easily, and Anna is the only one they have taken to Ren Faires outside of their group of friends.

Mikhail Kozlov

Despite the fact that he is Anna's cousin, Kali hates Mikhail. Some of the reasons are legitimate (he's immature and sometimes rude), others are not (the fact that he's poly annoys them). It is wise to keep them separated, because the feeling is mutual, much to Anna's dismay.

Simon Lowell

Even though their feelings towards his boyfriend are far from positive, Kali and Simon have a decent relationship. There is comradery in watching the cousins practice flips on a trampoline, lingering on the edge of the living room while Anna helps Mikhail fit into his cosplays, or declining a game of paintball in order to sit in the shade out of the blazing sun. They disagree on several subjects, but over the years have learned the instigating points of the other and now avoid them.

Maxwell Kozlov

Kali sees Max as a good but shy kid who could stand to have a bit of guidance. He reminds them a lot of their own little brother in a few ways, except not cis. They have helped him out where Mikhail could not in matters such as binding safely, voice exercises, and working out when the testosterone started working through his system. Max was originally intimidated by them, but recently they have coaxed him into joining their D&D group. Mikhail is very unhappy with Kali interacting with his little brother.
