Rook

"Why keep your friends close and your enemies closer? Make your friends and enemies the same and keep them all close."

Rook was initially from the Underdark's capital city, Ghrian Sol, where her interest in the occult began after her twin brother's abduction at the crumbling of an obsideon obelisk they encountered as children (7 yrs) which also took her leg. After her parents' separation, she moved to the Sun City where she worked as a low ranking detective within the Sun City Police Force. She continually begged for more interesting and high profile cases to the annoyance of her Partner Silas, her boss, and the whole force. She tirelessly attempted to research her brother's disappearance, but kept running into dead ends.

After taking on the case of a goliath falsely accused of murder, she quit the Sun City Police Force to join the Funnctional Chimera, an adventuring group of ambiguous morality, where they are in pursuit of a group which kidnaps and experiments on children, one of which they discovered was her brother, Bishop.

Her determination to find her brother and her reckless willingness to do just about anything has resulted in her crossbow being possessed not only by one, but two devils, Kezras, and Asmodeus who are in a war over the throne of Hell and Rook's soul, to which both promise to make her the Queen of Hell.

a 5'5" drow half-elf. She has dark olive skin and two downward pointed ears. Her eyes are a dark grey with dark, dark circles beneath, and dark, thin eyebrows. She has shoulder-length dark brown hair with long bangs pulled into loose a disorderly bun with a white streak on the right side of her face. She has a few light scars across the bridge her nose partially covered by her large round glasses that pinch the bridge as well and have a small sight on the right side. Her left leg is a silver and leather prosthetic.

Her clothes are worn, and her long coat is stained with dirt and blood. She wears primarily modest clothing in browns and blacks, along with sleeveless gloves.

Her expression is usually a vacant smile which looks out of place with how tired she SHOULD be.

Backstory

Rook was raised in the Underdark in Ghrian Sol, their capital city to her drow mother and human father alongside her twin brother. Rook always more resembled her father, with both her physical features as well as her skills and interests. She had a preference for games of logic, and loved watching her father tinker with weaponry and other gadgets he would make alterations on. She learned from him to be passionate and determined, knowing that whatever she set her mind to she could accomplish with the right skills, materials, and connections. Her brother always more resembled their mother, as he looked more physically like an elf, naturally, more like their mother. She valued more heavily developing physical strength rather than ingenuity, telling their two children often that the strongest not only survived but thrived in this world. Because of this, she favored Rook’s brother, and their father favored Rook. This was never intentionally expressed or blatantly admitted, but the children felt this was the case. This did put a strain on Rook’s relationship with her mother, as she felt she was always given the brunt of punishments and couldn’t live up to her expectations, but it was never doubted that Rook was loved. A similar strain did form between Rook’s brother and their father, as they felt they could never quite see eye to eye, but the twins had each other, and they each did have a parent they felt they could confide in, so for a while, this was enough.

The twins’ relationship was a great one. Neither were quite social butterflies, as they felt they really only needed each other. They’d come up with complex games that would build upon both of their strengths, brute strength, and logic. They were competitive as any siblings are, but sometimes their relationships with their parents did shine through and cause a small rift in games turned sour. But they would quickly make up, confiding in each other when these relationships weighed on them.

Their favorite game though, aside from physical sparring (which her brother would nearly always win unless Rook utilized the environment to her advantage) was chess. It was the one game of logic that her brother really felt he could keep up with Rook in, at her own strengths. She gave him all the time in the world to consider moves, and would even give him nonchalant advice through reverse psychology. Rook would win most games, but he did win a few, even when Rook tried her hardest. They’d play on a chess set that was their fathers, as it was his favorite game as well that he taught them. Because they enjoyed it so much, they adorned each other nicknames from the pieces. Rook became Rook, and her brother became Bishop. They thought these were quite fun and began introducing themselves as such.

One day, as the two were playing happily, through an incident concerning an obsidian obelisk crumbling onto Rook’s leg, requiring amputation, Bishop was kidnapped by someone with a robe with strange symbols across the material. Rook was unable to help, trapped beneath the rubble. Her memories of this event are incredibly hazy, obscured by the intense pain. She and her father worked together to craft a prosthetic leg for her, since, to her father, there were none good enough for her. During this process, she also watched him tinker with a heavy crossbow, his life’s work, that functioned much more deadly than any other crossbow she’d ever witnessed.

After receiving care and finishing her prosthetic, she began to have sleepless nights, overhearing her parents arguing about a variety of topics, but all tracing back to that day. About whether his death was Rook’s fault, whether she could have done something to save him, whether Rook was delusional, whether their relationship was worth continuing. Rook continually pleaded with them to believe her that he WAS alive and out there, not dead, but her parents, even her father, insisted Rook give up hope and face the facts. But to Rook? They were wrong. She didn’t have hope. Hope implied belief. Belief implied uncertainty. And Rook had absolutely NO uncertainty that her brother was out there. She saw him dragged away, and whether it was twin intuition or a higher power, she knew he was alive and she was going to find him. She never gave up trying to convince her parents to look for him, but this inadvertently accelerated her parents’ separation which was inevitable, as drow live much longer than humans do, but sooner than any of them would have anticipated. The stress of her mother’s favorite child vanishing with no trace, and a husband who was slowly beginning to show signs of aging that she wouldn’t experience for hundreds of years was the breaking point. Rook realized this, partially does blame the separation on herself, and decided it would be best to continue her search away from her parents and in secret. Before she left, her father did gift her his crossbow and taught her how to shoot, which she had an incredible talent for

Rook headed to the surface, following any lead she could find, most trails running cold very quickly. She found herself with very little money and the need for some inside information, and due to her intellect and VERY good shot, was hired as an officer of the Sun City police force. She never felt too much of a connection to the city, as this was her first time living alone and somewhat of a social outcast. Her passion she learned from her father became more of a frenzied obsession with the dark and macabre as she saw more and more cases. Her determination to solve her brother’s case spread to other cases she acquired with her begrudging partner Silas Whitestorm (who was assigned to her to curb her enthusiasm and just get the job done with minimal finances and paperwork) as she began to theorize the most wildest of explanations for the simplest of crimes. Sometimes she WAS correct, that everything seemed to be connected, but she became the laugh of the force, having no real friends or allies. The closest being Silas who, while tired of her antics, did admire her enthusiasm, and she did love stringing along. She was at a stall in her investigation of her brother’s kidnapping when her interest was piqued by a case of a goliath on public trial for murder where the clues just didn’t add up. She met the group the Functional Chimera, an adventuring group who was passing through the city. After meeting them and realizing the goliath, Sone, was framed, she aided the group in freeing him but not before handing in her badge after realizing the corruption that took place at the force, as Rook heavily values the truth, finding that to be the most exciting. After realizing her fate was intertwined with this group, and seeing they are all quite interesting people, she decided to pack her bags and travel with them.

The Oncoming Darkness

The Functional Chimera

17778510_lG1Ru9RWhdCIKRF.png

Rook invited herself to join the Functional Chimera adventuring group after finding the murderers this group kept running into quite interesting, and craving direction after quitting her low-ranking law enforcement job with the Sun City Police Force. She officially joined when members of the party seemingly had connections with a group Rook had been in pursuit of for 2 decades to no avail. Until now.

Since joining the Functional Chimera, she willingly lost a game of chess to a cambion, Kezras, who posessed her fucked up crossbow and speaks to her in her mind. She has also less willingly made a deal with the fallen angel Aesmodeus, her functioning leg for information regarding her twin brother, who has also possessed her crossbow.

After another party member destroyed an obsideon obelisk, she felt a pain in her hand, and found a space in her crossbow for an arcane talisman, which matched that of the wepaon of that same party member.

She alongside party member Morana consumed raw cyclops heart, after Kezras encouraged her to do so. Neither faired so well afterwards, but Rook is dtermined now to stomach raw heart given it's Kezras's favorite food.

She has fought a dragon alongside the group at a gala, and forged ownership with the help of a merchant in the city of the house of a noblewoman who died at said gala.

In exchange for information, she collected the artifact the Thorned Veil for Aesmodeus in an ancient temple, where another party member was set to destroy. But given his awareness of Rook's forfeit soul and leg, he swore to help kill both Kezras and Aesmodeus to the other.

After their chimera accidentally set a town on fire, in their escape after a series of traumatic visions for Rook, losing control of her body multiple times to Aesmodeus, and finding clues the lord of the town was involved in the same group that abducted Rook's brother, the group decided it be best to rest for a few days to fix Rook's crossbow and meet the large family of one of the party members' as it was on the way to their next destination. After this member's mother recognized Rook as the child of her friend (Rook's mother), and finding leads that the eldest sibling was involved with this group ignorant to their practices at first, when the Functional Chimera investigated, it appeared as though the sibling died in a freak accident as her room caught fire, and she was nowhere to be found. Rook was able to finnd traces of teleportation magic which suggests that she is alive, but nowhere to be seen. The Functional Chimera now has 2 siblings involved with the dealings of this organization, as well as another party member who ignorantly had dealings with them in the past, quite disconnected

After attempting to wingman the party's goliath, Sone, with Mayumi's aasimar sister, Octavia, Octavia admitted she actually liked Rook, finding not only Rook's prosthetic leg and crossbow interesting, but her as well. Their first date consisted of crafting a rapier for Mayumi. Octavia, alongside repairing King's Gambit also installed a shortsword in Rook's prosthetic leg she'd agreed to let her take a look at. Before leaving, Rook promised to write to her, and give a "long distance" relationship a try, despite admitting she might not make it out of this alive, telling Octavia to not let Rook hold her back if someone struck her fancy.

Rook also discovered that Mayumi's mother actually knew Rook, from when she was 4 years old, as she greeed her by her actual name, Vervaine. She and her mother had been friends, bringing her daughter, Marina, a drow half-elf like Rook, to visit. Rook vaguely remembered this, but seeing someone so much like her mother be so kind and loving with her children messed with Rook's head, as her relationship with her mother was quite strained and always had been. After a getting slapped in the face for suggesting that her daughter might work for a very evil organization, Rhamtep's kindness she showed Rook, the hugs, and especially expressing how proud she was of her and admitting she began to cut off Trionis because of how she treated Rook sent Rook into a breakdown. And being welcomed back any time and treated like part of the family was something Rook will never forget. She sees Mayumi a lot more as a sister now, promising to multiple family members that she will protect her. Taking this extremely seriously, given how she, in her own eyes, failed to protect her brother.

Relationships

Twin Brother

66444206_mSTbSTaeKLGpbM8.png

Bishop (Valerian Arum)

Rook’s half-elf twin brother who was kidnapped by the group Siera Tou Thanatou. They were always very close and very competitive with one another. Out of the siblings he was always more elf-like, looking more like their mother, which their mother favored. He was also more physically strong than Rook and less skilled at games of logic. But one day, he was kidnapped, while Rook lay trapped beneath an obsidian obelisk which crumbled atop her leg. Rook is convinced he is still alive, but this conviction was a catalyst of their parents’ inevitable separation. Rook’s singular goal is to find her brother.

Father

12877178_CxZY12gwPKzZXBB.png

Lucius Wolfram

Rook's human father. Rook always related more to his human nature than that of her elven mother, and he favored her as well. He taught her how to tinker and how to shoot a crossbow. The crossbow Rook christened King's Gambit was originally his that he gifted to her as she made her journey from the Underdark to Sun City. He was always kind, and while he struggled to relate to Bishop, he tried his hardest to show his love. He has a ver logical mind, relying more upon strategy and ingenuity than brute strength. Rook does not currently know his whereabouts.

Mother

12877178_CxZY12gwPKzZXBB.png

Septentrionis Arum

Rook's drow mother. Her relationship with her mother was always strained. While there was never any doubt that they loved one another, Trionis struggled to relate to Rook and favored her brother, who was more elven that she could see parts of herself within. She would be harder on Rook, often saying that the strong not only survived but thrived in this world. She also couldn't hide her disappointment in Rook's lack of magical abilities. She always looked more like her father, which after Trionis and Lucius's separation made looking at Rook even harder. She blames Rook for Bishop's "death" and refuses to entertain Rook's "games" on insisting Bishop is alive.
