Carmen was born to her parents, Sutton, and Willard Medicci, both tieflings in the 9 Hells. They were not destined to be powerful, but through a mysterious set of circumstances that lead to their family assuming tremendous influence, the parents found themselves struggling to fit in with the other nobles. Neither had grown up in this sort of decadence nor political responsibility. But Carmen, on the other hand, thrived in this environment as a social butterfly. Her parents quickly recognized her gift in charisma and often depended upon her to negotiate social situations, which Carmen loved. She loved the fancy parties, the beautiful clothes, the dancing...but she did not enjoy the political side of the job. She wasn't that..intelligent and her parents noticed this as well. She did excel in combat. She loved to spar and had the gift for it at a very young age. Her auntie saw the potential in her, a general of the guard and took personal interest in training her. Nearly everything that Carmen knows regarding combat is due to her, and is considered classically trained. She sees combat as a dance.

Her Auntie did make this clear to her parents, who encouraged her to specialize in combat training. They also noticed Carmen's natural gift for magic, but Carmen wasn't really quite interested in pursuing it, or refining it. Once Carmen reached adulthood, her parents sent her on diplomatic missions to provide her guard and leadership services to strengthen and forge alliances. They sent her to the Underdark to be the personal guard of the Viscountess Rhiannon LeBeau.

Carmen had quite the culture shock from the 9 Hells to the Underdark, but absolutely loved the aesthetics. After seeing how stressed and overworked Rhiannon was from assuming the position after her parents prematurely died, Carmen took charge to clear her schedule, and teach Rhiannon how to let loose and how to relax. After this, Rhiannon conntinued to request Carmen's services, and Carmen very happily continued to work. The viscountess's twin brother, Sorren, was at first quite angry and jealous of Carmen's position, given how being her guard was perviously his job, but after sensing the romantic tension between the two, he quickly became supportive. Carmen became close friends with him as well, loving to spar and talk about both of their favorite animals, dragons. Her parents, seeing how close Carmen and Rhiannon had become, proposed the two marry, mostly for diplomatic purposes, but neither Carmen nor Rhiannon had any complaints

After the two became engaged, Carmen suggested they take a trip. Rhiannon was quite interested in Wizardry, despite being frowned upon in the culture of the Underdark. So they two of them went on a covert research trip, while disguising it as a vacation. But as they approached one of the museums, Carmen felt something calling to her that she couldn't walk away from. The voice eminated from the Silken Spite, a weapon who previously belonged to a prince. She and Rhiannon performed a heist, collecting artifacts from the museum on the orders of Yochlol Sinnafex. The two realizing what they'd done flee the Underdark with one of Sorren's dragons, Rubby (who Carmen affectionally calls Ruby Baby), who happily helps them to escape. They arrive on the material plane and attempt to remain on the DL to not give away their location. Carmen ever since changed her last name to DiCaos, which she and Rhiannon will adopt, and is avoiding the calling of her parents who have no idea where she is and need her help to cling onto any semblance of power they have in the Hells.
