About

Note for FGs: Ariel's entire story is public knowledge in-universe. As such, feel free to have your character know just about anything on this page.

Metaphorically, an angel whose wings have been stripped. In reality, the human avatar of an eons-old spacefaring entity, one whose existence was pure benevolence and whose mission was only altruism. Now, however, he is forced to inhabit a human body and to experience human emotions, and it has been quite the adventure. Worshipped by some, dismissed by others, Ariel's only true power is now his immortality. Even after some time spent on Earth, his ability to cope with his new existence is questionable, and he longs for his journeying days... though he does his best to pass his time well on the planet that serves as his purgatory. It's fortunate, then, that he is practically worshipped by humanity as its savior, though there is little he can do for them now.

--- appearance ---
First and foremost, Ariel looks as though a sharp breeze might tip him over. He is petite, at 5'3", with the appearance of an effeminate and androgynous man. This coupled with his name leads to some frequent confusion about his gender, which does not faze him as he is entirely outside of the whole 'gender' thing to begin with. He defaults to 'he/him' pronouns and male terminology solely because it's what people assume thanks to his physical embodiment.

Ariel's skin and hair are pure white, though he flushes pink. His eyes are similar to those of an albino animal, a rich pink with darker pupils. Long, mildly wavy hair dips far down his back, often tied into a ponytail. When down, it's long enough to reach his pelvis. His body bears many scars of varying sizes and shapes, with not even his face being spared- a particular one stands out on the center of his forehead, being a precise diamond-like shape.

His face is on the longer side, but rather than having a regal and angular aspect, his features are quite soft. Indeed, there's very little sharpness to him at all, only gentle shapes that stand at odds to a seemingly abused, scarred body.

One notable and somewhat bizarre feature is his wings- if you can call them that. They are quite small and vestigial, having the shape of a bird's wings, but without any feathers. Instead, they are bare flesh, matching the rest of his skin.

--- backstory ---
Before Ariel took on his human form, he was an ancient travelling entity that took the form of a diamond made of pure plasma. Glowing and incandescent, this being journeyed from planet to planet, focusing those that bore life. Its deeds were various, but all intended to support life and allow it to flourish: averting catastrophes (such as meteors), adjusting climates to be more suitable for organisms, and so forth. Additionally, its presence seemed to confer good fortune to those planets it lingered by, increasing the odds of peace and prosperity, though it could or would not create utopias. In its long existence, this entity was worshipped by many civilizations, though it always left to find another once its work was done at a particular planet. It is unknown what created it- perhaps it still does not know itself.

Eventually, it came to Earth, its presence ushering humans into an age of prosperity and peace. However, this magnanimous entity was not the only one with its eyes set on the planet. After some years of Ariel's presence, another being made itself known: an eldritch god, seeking to consume Earth and harvest the many souls living within. Determined to fend off the attacker, Ariel fought back, killing it. However, this was not the end: in search of revenge, the god's masters came, far more powerful than their fallen kin. It was time for Ariel's punishment.

Initially, the gods attempted to kill him, but nothing could make him die, not even the powers of ancient eldritch gods. For his insolence, Earth would serve as his purgatory if death would not have him. The entity was forced by higher powers into a human form, and descended to the planet, its hero. As one last act, however, the entity used the rest of its power to curse the gods and their descendants, rotting away their powers. Though the extent of the curse would not be known for hundreds more years, its power was to drain away the souls consumed by these cosmic beings, thus draining their power and making it difficult or impossible to maintain their forms. This would cause great chaos, and would plague these beings indefinitely, terrifying them with the idea that they might be rendered mortal.

Upon landing upon Earth, Ariel was taken in by humans. Practically worshipped by some, and genuinely worshipped by others, he was at least welcomed with open arms. However, he had no abilities to speak of, other than being undying and unaging. He was given everything that he could want and more... the only issue was that he wanted nothing more than to return to his previous existence. Not to mention, of course, the burden of human emotion...

Notably, Ariel's arrival on Earth also heralded the (unfortunate) presence of the Inquisitor, who keeps an eye on him regularly, though there isn't really much Ariel can do to cause any trouble. At least, not any time soon.

--- personality ---
Giving Ariel a human form came with human emotions, something originally foreign to him. He still hasn't managed to harness them, having gone without such things for millennia. As such, his emotional intelligence is very low, and he has little control over his feelings. He is prone to mood swings and teenager-like breakdowns, and could be described as fairly immature, though he can put up a front of sophistication when required. He is hyperempathetic to a fault and easily stirred to emotion by the plights of others, even in fiction.

Despite it all, he tries his best to be kind and patient. He certainly isn't a rude or aggressive person, but he has a tough time navigating his own emotions and expressing them in proper ways. To be sure, he is very bitter and sad about being stuck on Earth, but does not resent the planet itself. In fact, he finds it quite beautiful and interesting, and was initially excited to see it from a new perspective. However, over the years that pleasure has worn a bit thin.

Easily bored, Ariel seeks novel, interesting experiences and ways to pass the time. He frequently moves from hobby to hobby, seeking something that will give him fulfillment. While he has taken on a number of hobbies, he has focused in particular on sculpting, from small trinkets to large statues. He often gives away his creations, seeing little value in keeping anything but his favorites. Besides that, he finds that the happiness people gain from receiving them is worth more than the satisfaction of keeping them.

Overall, Ariel is really a gentle soul- he's sometimes just a bit irritating, and has little self-control. Unable to make the large, sweeping decisions he once made as a powerful celestial entity, he settles for improving lives where he can as a demi-human, though he often finds himself dissatisfied with his limited ability. Though many people love him, he does not particularly care for their affection, nor does he reject it- it simply is. Say what you want of him, but at least he is not guilty of the sin of pride.

--- abilities ---
Many humans believe that Ariel still has the ability to confer blessings and good fortune. Ariel is not certain whether this is true- and it's not. Nevertheless, he believes that it makes humans happy to give his 'blessing' to them, and so he does.

Ariel can die, but he will come back. His body simply regenerates, no matter the amount of damage. However, as of yet he has never died to test any of this. Beyond that, he regenerates any injury, normally in a matter of minutes. Finally, he does not age.

He must eat, drink, sleep, breathe, and is in all aspects physically human in terms of biological needs.

Notably, he is capable of detecting at once whether an individual is human or not, though he cannot tell precisely what they are beyond that- except for a specific brand of eldritch beings, whose aura he immediately recognizes thanks to significant exposure to Dove and the other entities he's met.

"An umbilical cord connects the earth and the cosmos. It is a ladder, a spring, a bowstring. It is you."
