Moonkit was born from an absent father and a solitary mother, Robinscratch. Cloudkit soon disappeared after being born, and Moonkit remained with Pinekit under Robinscratch's care. Unfortunately, her first negative memories were connected to her clan's cruel indifference and her mother's mistakes. When the clan was moved to Hidden Havens due to a twoleg invasion near the Shadowclan camp, she was left behind in the chaotic crowd of cats and nearly starved. Nightshiver, a lonely queen that used to care for orphan kits in Shadowclan, found her and gave her the milk she needed to survive. When Robinscratch found her, she kept distrustful behavior toward her and quickly took back Moonkit without many explanations.

During the Dark Hunger that Shadowclan was experiencing a couple of moons later, her family particularly suffered the hunger for the clan had neglected their duties, and the hunting patrols hadn't worked out for quite some time. She caught whitecough, and even during that period Nightshiver took care of her and offered her the few scraps of food she had received for herself. Now Moonkit is close to being apprenticed, and she still keeps her resentment toward all the cruel Shadowclanners that treat their clanmates like garbage, which, in her opinion, include nearly everyone except for a few warriors. She dislikes every close follower of Dawnstar, and her cruel and bloody ways of ruling Shadowclan. Even though Moonkit is young, she's very smart and has soon realized how cynical and bloodthirsty her leader is. Her first memory of death was the public execution of Heatherrain by Dawnstar herself during a meeting. The blood, the visciousness and cruelty of the act will never leave Moonkit’s mind.

She spent her youth often playing alone, and at the age of 8 moons she still hadn’t received her apprentice name and a mentor. Moonkit had avoided drawing attention to her so that she wouldn’t have to learn from the evil ways of the cat that would’ve become her mentor. Still, she decided to have fun and learn new things on her own by sneaking out at night from the nursery. Soon she found a swamp close to camp, and she quickly learned the route so that every time she could use the same path and avoid getting lost in her own territory. There, she had the opportunity to know something about the marshland of Shadowclan’s territories and to play by hunting the frogs that lived there. This led her to practice stealth movements and hunting attacks so that the few warriors who had gained interest in her had immediately recognized the talent in her skills.

As soon as she received her new name and a good mentor, her life changed completely. She found new purpose in her life during her daily trainings, developing a passion for exploration and learning all kind of skills, fighting included. Unfortunately, during this period her mother suddenly disappears from Shadowclan and never returns back. Moonpaw will live this event as an abandonment and always hold a grudge against her parents for leaving her and her brother.

Moonpaw immediately shows promise to those around her: competitive but skilled as well, she manages to get recognized pretty quickly by winning a stalking competition held by Mirehound at that time. Despite her age, at that time she was still named Moonkit.

One day another cruel execution takes place in front of the young cat by Dawnstar herself. Moonpaw's mentor, Darkfall, tried to protect her from the view but he can't do anything to hide his leader's choices. That day Pinepaw, her brother, decides to leave Shadowclan forever and announces it in front of everyone during that same meeting. Pinepaw's leaving will be the last member of her family to go away. She'll always regret her brother's choice and hold resentment against him, claiming that everyone she loved had chosen anything else over her.

Time goes by, and Moonpaw's training shows promise everyday. Even the Enforcers seem to notice her natural talent and take an interest in training her, although she will stick more gladly with his mentor only. In her mind, the only ones remained to care for her were now Nightshiver and Darkfall. Moonpaw didn't have any friend of her age, although she held a particular grudge against Nightshiver's apprentice, Wildpaw, for her arrogant and disrespectful behavior toward everyone around her.
