Darling Carbuncle. LOOK at that little puppy face.

Created as a new Astral by the Hexatheon (well, it now seems to be a Septatheon) specifically for the purpose of protecting their golden son, Noctis Lucis Caelum, and seeing Noct through his quest to defeat the Immortal Accursed and deliver Eos of the Starscourge, Carbuncle is a little fox with the miraculous ability to heal the injured and raise the dead.

Despite the fact that he is in on many secrets of the universe, there are a few crucial details he is not in on - most importantly, the following:

1.) Noctis Lucis Caelum, in completing his quest, has to die very young. If Carbuncle knew, he would be heartbroken.

2.) The Six have not told him the full story of how the Immortal Accursed came to be, and they have not even told him WHO the Immortal Accursed is, choosing to let Carbuncle figure it out on his own.

BACKSTORY

Carbuncle first met Noctis when they were both 'children' (Noct literally so, Carbuncle just having the mental maturity of a child around Noct's age), after Noct had been attacked by a daemon and ended up with a nasty leg injury that never 100% healed, even into adulthood. Positively glowing with pride, Carbuncle was very excited to carry out his first assignment on his own quest as ordained by the Six: to guide Noct to safety in the world of his dreams and help him wake up in the real world.

Carbuncle had the time of his eternal life, and, though he wasn't 100% aware of why his feelings were doing this weird fluttery, giddy thing, he fell in love with Noct at first sight. Literal puppy love.

(Their ensuing relationship by the end of the main plot would be a little strange if he just stayed a puppy forever, but since he didn't, and ended up staying in human form infinitely more often than puppy form - to the point that he's come to understand it as his truest self at the end of the day, it's perfectly ethical and consensual!)

He proceeded to semi-secretly check up on Noct now and again throughout his childhood and teen years, wanting to make sure Noct was both alive and happy. (Starting in... Roughly highschool, or maybe at the end of middleschool, Noct slowly stopped being such a happy child. Carbuncle wouldn't figure out the reason why for a very, very long time.)

However, it wasn't until Noct officially began his quest at age 20 that Carbuncle started planning to get involved in a more major, active way. When Noct's initial party of four found their way to Galdin Quay, so did Carbuncle, in disguise as a young man around their age with bluish-green hair, calling himself Mercy Pyrope. With a craftiness that would make the Astrals proud, Mercy figured out how to insert himself into their agenda without seeming forceful or unnatural - appearing to be a regular guy who happened to be around at the right time to help them out. And so, he wormed his way into their hearts (platonically at this point) with his sweet personality and sense of humor, charming them just enough to be seen as a pleasant acquaintance - maybe even the beginning of a friend. Once seeing his miraculous abilities of healing without the use of items, the party agrees that it's worth a shot to take him along.

He makes himself useful along the way, always trying to help when help is needed, whether it's with cooking dinner, gathering supplies or lending an ear when someone needs to vent. Though, to a normal Astral, this would all be pretense, Mercy genuinely does like the guys, and sees them as his best friends after enough time passes. He's never had friends before! Not that he tells them that, not that they figure it out with how friendly but socially adept he is, but it's very exciting.

He is blissfully ignorant for much of the main plot of the Minivan AU, believing he is working for the forces of good - until the disaster in Altissia, at the summoning of Leviathan, when Ignis, running madly through the streets of Altissia to find Noct, accidentally happened upon a tidbit of cosmic wisdom he was never meant to find, from Pryna who was lying with and comforting Luna in what initially appeared to be Luna's last moments.

(Luna survives, and, of course, so does Pryna. Dogs dying is illegal. Don't be an idiot.)

Ignis learns that Noct is fated to die in order to complete his quest as ordained by the Six.

Mercy learns that the Six have lied to him - perhaps they'd call it something other than lying, and insist it was for the greater good.

Luna reveals that she knew all along, and breaks down sobbing in front of them, barely able to take this cruel prophecy any longer, realizing that perhaps Gentiana and the Six have been cruel to her from the very beginning.

So, the three of them form a pact: To do absolutely everything in their power to change Noct's fate, and find a peaceful, happy ending that doesn't result in Noct's horrible death. After this incident, the three of them become inseparable friends, all having such an important common purpose that leads them to come together in other ways, as best friends and comrades.

This secret is theirs for a long while.

Despite being an Astral, Mercy is not perfect. He has a gullible streak, tending to fall for promises of heel face turns and friendship from his adversaries very easily. Similarly, he tends to believe what he is told and rarely questions it - and thus, is unintentionally complicit in a number of horrible situations. These situations include large-scale horrible, like the prophecy involving Noct, and smaller-scale horrible, like the unhealthy friendships Gladio has with everyone in not knowing how to handle his own emotions productively. However, once he's able to put two and two together, Mercy works hard to fix the mistakes he's made as well as he possibly can. Another weakness of his is how quickly he falls in love with people - this is a beautiful thing, of course, but leads to serious trouble when he's more inclined to trust those who ought not be trusted, at least at first, such as Ardyn and Ravus.

Being such a young (for an Astral, anyway) and simple being, who has not experienced any truly severe trauma (though he ends up with his fair share of it later on in the plot), he's not predisposed to have particularly heinous or toxic flaws, but he's got 'em nonetheless.

[WORK IN PROGRESS! tl;dr witness my power move of just flat-out making an indulgent character who 2000s era fandom would bash as a "mary sue" without even the slightest bit of shame B) ]

Noctis

[ relationship ]

[WIP] Noct is absolutely everything to Mercy. He's Mercy's whole world and more. He was the reason Mercy was created, after all.

Ignis

[ relationship ]

[WIP] Mercy and Ignis always get along just fine, especially since Mercy helps Ignis out so much around camp, but after Altissia, they become inseparably intimate "partners in crime," one might say, as their ultimate goal is to undermine the Six and save Noct from his doomed fate.

Prompto

[ relationship ]

[WIP] Prompto is the first of the main party that Mercy really and truly bonds with (platonically and romantically), taking to Prompto's cheery and funny personality right away. They sort of feed each other's enthusiasm, both very likely to jump up and down and yell and laugh if they're really excited by something. Mercy also comes to share Prompto's adoration for Chocobos.

Gladio

[ relationship ]

[WIP] ... Well... They're friends, yeah! They get along well. But there's a sort of... Negative undercurrent to their interactions, mostly on Gladio's end at first, due to Gladio's passive aggressive judgment of Mercy's masculinity (or lack thereof). Gladio's not a flat out asshole about it 24/7, he's not some raging strawman who only exists to be mean to Mercy, in fact most of the time he's a cool guy. But every now and again he makes these little digs at Mercy, calling him names like "Princess," implying he's tiny and weak and a feminine failure of a man.

Luna

[ relationship ]

[WIP] Mercy and Luna get along right away! She can likely sense something Different about him, but she's smart enough to not say anything. They're kindred spirits in not saying shit about the shit only they know, until Altissia when they become inseparable best friends.

Ravus

[ relationship ]

[WIP] Okay-- Mercy is kind of with Noct on this one, he GETS why Ravus is upset, but why is all of this Noct's fault? Why is it acceptable to run around swinging his sword at Noct? Come on. Please be reasonable. However, despite that semi-reasonable take of Ravus' dilemma, Mercy at first does not understand why Ravus is the commander of the military of the empire that killed his mother and occupied his home country. He figures it out eventually after getting a justified tongue-lashing from Ravus, and he feels very sorry for thinking Ravus was just some irrational bastard.

Ignis

[ relationship ]

[WIP] Not knowing Ardyn is the Accursed, Mercy is at first extremely infatuated with this older gentleman, hoping right away after their first meeting in Lestallum (Mercy wasn't around for the OFFICIAL first meeting with Ardyn at Galdin Quay) that they meet again very, very soon. So - that turns out to be something he maybe shouldn't have wished for, because the party figures out soon after that, that Ardyn is the Chancellor of Niflheim. Which is completely terrible, as this party has no tolerance for imperialist bullshit. Consider Mercy sad and disappointed, maybe a little heartbroken. But oh, he ain't seen nothin' yet, because Ardyn's got another awful little introduction to make later on in the main plot... Well. Unfortunately, this puppy is still a bit in love.
