Solstice Wood is very reserved and slow to make friends with others, unless they like you within the first 5 minutes (ie. They read you as ND or LGBT+). His quiet nature and matter-of-fact tone can come across as pretentious or off-putting, but be rest assured- He finds you just as perplexing, in the nicest way possible.
If they like you, they won't tell you. Instead, they will ask you questions about your life and interest to get to know you better. They will buy an oran muffin at the bakery because you once complained that every bakery seems to be sold out of them (Even if that conversation was from weeks ago). They will invite you around for a meal when you're overwhelmed with work, just to ensure you're nourishing yourself and taking breaks (Something they will rarely do for themselves, so don't even suggest it). They will do their best to make you feel loved, understood, and safe- even if they don't message back for 3 weeks because they forgot to look away from their computer/ Pokemon except to blink- because you make them feel the same way.
If they don't like you, they still won't tell you. They won't tell you much of anything but will think very hard about your irritating habits in your general direction. Mind readers, beware.
Solstice works almost daily as a conservationist to improve the world for humans and Pokemon. He dreams of a society that doesn't destroy the livelihoods of others in pursuit of development and greed, but each year that balance gets harder to attain and believe in. Sometimes, the effort seems futile, and the future seems hopeless. He accepts the feelings as they are, takes a slow breath, and continues onwards as best he can. So long as they're working, there will be change.
This ambition and focus kept him isolated from his peers as a child (Except for Barry, who was always there), but he didn't mind. Granted, it stung a little when the other kids in his class glared at him when he spoke up, or when there was a birthday party over the weekend he had no idea about, but they couldn't control what other people thought of them. It seemed pointless to try, anyway.
But as he grew older, got wiser, and experienced his Pokemon journey, he started understanding the sweet balance between love and work. No matter how much he loves research and fieldwork, he loves his friends, family, and partner more. It's not easy to keep his life and work in check, but his loved ones are always worth it.
One related mindset they're always trying to learn is how to ask for help. They view themselves (Partly justified, partly not) as someone who always knows what to do so, who will assure people that everything is under control. If they let it slip that they're not perfect and can't reach the impossibly high standards they set for themselves, then what are they doing? What are they good for? What will people think of them then?
It's irrational, and he knows it, but it's nearly impossible to halt the cycle of expecting perfection, overworking themselves, and isolating themselves to hide the inevitable burnout and breakdown.
And it's almost just as impossible to get out of it, but again- his loved ones are worth it. If only he could learn to care for himself for his own sake.
History
Childhood
Solstice moved from Galar to Sinnoh when they were 4 years old. Despite the culture shock, they quickly settled into the life of forest explorations with friends and day trips to Lake Verity. Every day they would observe the behaviours of random Pokemon in their garden, or try to figure out if the abundance of plants in a river would affect the species present, or other ways to connect A to C, regardless of how obvious B seems to be. Professor Rowan and his assistances actively encouraged his questions and curiosities. As such, Sol greatly enjoyed classes based on science, including biology and Pokemon husbandry, but struggled in PE, literature, and history. This trend continued long after they graduated.
At 12, Solstice graduated from the small school in Twinleaf to a secondary school in Jubilife. They kept up their reputation for being a diligent student, although almost all report cards boiled down to "Very bright and ambitious, needs to dedicate more time to interacting with peers."
Fortunately, Barry didn't care that Sol preferred to read under a tree while he was the one who climbed it, nor did he mind that Sol would rarely interrupt his rambles.
One morning (but not for the first time), Barry took too long getting ready for school and caused them both to miss the bus to Jubilife. Nobody had the time to take them, and Professor Rowan knew they could still make it in time for 1st period if they trekked through the wild area- But they'd need the protection of a Pokemon to get through.
Solstice chose a Chimchar, guessing it would likely be an ape-like fire-type pokemon. They guessed right and beat Barry's Turtwig in his first-ever pokemon battle. They named him pokemon Major, and they had never separated since. With their new skills and abilities, Solstice soon caught a Starly and named her Aquila.
Although they didn't understand it then, his unnaturally sharp connection to pokemon continued to grow.

Trivia / Misc.
【☆】They bring an extensive tea collection for all fieldwork expeditions, but at home they prefer coffee.
★ Their biggest fear is rejection. He coped well enough as a child, but as an adult, the thought of people finding him repulsive makes him spiral into a cycle of insatiable validation. It's partly why he doesn't make an effort to make new friends with most people.
【☆】Many people think he wears the same 3 outfits every day- When actually, he has an entire matching wardrobe. He doesn't like changing his outfits or accessories and considers his usual aesthetic as part of his identity
★ They have used they/ him pronouns for as long as they can remember.
【☆】Despite excelling his maths and science, he got very poor grades in PE and literature (Don't ask him what the blue curtains are meant to represent).
★ Cyrus' pet name for him is Sunshine (and his pet names for Cyrus is an impressive list)
【☆】At their worst/ most hyperfocused, their go-to meal is plain bread dipped in (usually cold) gravy. Cyrus has often said it's one of the few things he doesn't find attractive in Sol. Sol doesn't care.
