Background story
Finn and her family lived underground in the Deep-sea area, considering octolings had been forced to live underground they had to bury deeper to avoid treading on their space. However this space is mostly artificial, not seeing much sunlight or receiving oxygen from the surface so the Deep-sea inhabitants got creative and found ways to implement those things themselves. When the events of Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion occured TarTar set free many brainwashed octarians/octolings to infect the ones below them, and seeing as they follow directly to their word the sanitized made it to the Deep-sea village. They started to infect and brainwash the villagers and cut the direct line of oxygen from getting to the city. Finn and her family then had to find a way to get out alive- wearing gas masks at all times and trying to sneakily find a way out. As some would do in a situation like this a lot of litter was scattered all throughout her beloved city, among this litter was a flier for the Deep-sea Metro station, that could take them anywhere away from her home. Along her journey she runs into a lost and out of breath octoling with sniper gear on, he was panting and his eyes were shot with the recognizable look of fear and panic. He stopped and met eyes with Finn, without a second thought he ran up to her and squeezed her while starting to cry, just happy to know that somebody survived the sanitization attack. From then the 2 never leave each other's side, eventually growing close enough to start dating- this octoling was Bruce. Once they all were able to make it to the train Finn and Bruce were sent to go investigate the surface world and pave a way for her family to follow.
