"... Is there anything that concerns you?"

August is the "good kid" to Brandon's bad kid at school and at home, but is everything as it seems?

While far more sociable in public than his twin, August is fairly closed off internally. He also appears to dislikes physical contact, despite being very affectionate in private - the problem is that there are very few people he feels comfortable with being physically affectionate with (in fact, he has to practically wrangle Brandon into hugs because he keeps wiggling out of them - stop hurting your poor touch-starved brother’s feelings, Brandon). August is seen as "the responsible one" of the Jirouhiko household, much to his twin's disgust ("You think he's responsible? He never tells me when he's ordered something on eBay until it arrives!") Unlike Brandon he can cook, he just doesn’t bother to tell people about it. He cooks his own meals (and often his twin’s — they share the same tastes, so Brandon rarely turns food from August down, unless it’s as a matter of pride) less out of a sense of responsibility than his extremely picky taste in food, consisting almost exclusively of salad, white meats and candied anything.

August cares about reputation and being a “respectable student”, and part of that is seeming unfazed at anything that life throws at him. Teachers are often surprised at how quickly he settles in. That said he's serious about the oddest things, like Halloween costumes (he drags Brandon around to shop for preparations ahead of time every year), perfect diction (he used to stutter when he was first learning how to speak in full sentences, and was so ashamed that he made his twin talk for him for a few months. Brandon thought he was being very silly) and the existence of magic (August went through a intense Harry Potter phase when he was ten, working himself up on his birthday because he was convinced that his Hogwarts letter was coming - their parents encouraged him because they thought it was cute, though he was inconsolable when it never arrived). On the other hand, he couldn't think less of romance, and insists they're too young for it whenever anyone brings the topic up. He rolls his eyes whenever Brandon insists he’s straight.

Brandon

[ twin ] August has no idea what he wants to be in the future, and he's lowkey jealous of Brandon for being passionate about something. He's also probably the only person August will ever lose his temper over - Brandon once took up smoking, very briefly, and it was the first time he'd seen August furious since they were thirteen. Usually, though, August irritates Brandon far more than the other way around: he steals his coat even though Brandon yells at him for it. Every. Single. Time. And gets fur on it, since August reflexively pets every cat or dog he sees.

Arye

The vetehi could not be coaxed away from the water; but at August's touch they stilled and let themselves be pulled, neither conceding nor resisting, knotted strands of their hair trailing across the surface of the briny water. They made an abortive attempt to launch themselves back into the sea the instant their feet touched the shore, but he caught them by the wrist in time and steered them back to the seaside house.

He watched them sleep near the fire that evening, wrapped up to the ears in every blanket in the house, and thought that if Brandon had been there he would have let them swim away and drown. Once they had come across a dying cat on the road, half-crushed by a passing car, and his twin had stepped forward and wrung its neck because he couldn’t bear to see it suffering. His brother never thought of the consequences, only what he thought was right. He had refused to leave him alone with the vetehi for the first few days; but at August’s urging he had finally left for a shopping run, reluctantly but not without relief. Likely he thought that August had been making a breakthrough with the wild creature, and was even now negotiating the return to the sea.

Unfortunately, August knew better. The vetehi was in no state to be left alone - they followed them both room to room, and if one of them so much as got up they immediately stood to attention, as though afraid that they would run off. Brandon tolerated the duck-footed intruder much better than August had expected from him, even if he kept glancing at them with an discomfited look on his face, perhaps due to the uncanny resemblance to a newborn fawn or his heterosexual worry of being near someone so attractive without knowing their gender; or, more likely, they shared the same discomfort at being so unapologetically stared at.

“I wonder what your name is.” he said aloud to the room after they'd woken, glancing sidelong at them, perhaps expecting the same growl-trill he’d thought he’d heard when he was half-delirious from dehydration back on the rocks; but the vetehi merely blinked once, so slowly that he couldn’t say if they understood.
