North

North (ノース) is a Puella Magi (magical girl) from Earth (Puella Magi Madoka Magica) that got isekai'd into Twisted Wonderland. Her new life in a new world consists of her slowly living an ordinary life and relearning to be a kid. She is twisted mainly from the Elsa the Snow Queen from "Frozen". She is not Yuu.

Personality

North appears to others as introverted, as expected of someone in Ignihyde. She appears mostly stoic but is more expressive and outgoing with those she is close to. If one were to read her thoughts, they would get a storm. Under that, she is jaded, pessimistic, wary of people's intentions, even pragmatic or selfish no matter how much she wants to do the right thing, as a result of her magical girl days. Under that, she is capable of love. As for how far she'll go out of love, it's best not to discuss that.

She is tight-lipped about her background or her magic, as things in Twisted Wonderland may be different on Earth where magic is unnatural. She will say she had an ordinary life but won't disclose her place of origin. Her past is in the past and is best left there instead of dug up.

She is aware of the differences between the descriptions of the Great Seven and their film counterparts but doesn't comment on it. She knows the original version of "Aladdin" had the sorcerer and vizier as separate characters, that myth!Hades is the chill one that isn't as involved in the "family drama" that the other gods get into, and some of the original versions of stories that have been adapted by Disney.

She has untreated C-PTSD and undiagnosed autism. She knows she has trauma and autism but can only self-diagnose because getting officially diagnosed would require others to get involved. Because the trauma has to do with her time as a magical girl, she keeps quiet about it.

As an NRC student... She works in the Mystery Shop and will pick up on notable regulars like Ruggie and Ortho. In terms of academics, she does her best and tries to aim as high as she can. But in Physical Education classes, she feels that the superhuman strength and abilities her magical girl status gives her would make her stand out, so she holds back and sticks to being on the average side, never using her full strength. To Vargas, it looks like she isn't pushing her limits so he tries to encourage her. In the beginning, she only used magic when necessary but nowadays uses it for small everyday things such as levitating objects or making a barrier for an umbrella.

Magic

In-game, her elemental magic is primarily Water with Fire later appearing as a secondary element. Her Cosmic magic is Light. In Magia Record and Magia Exedra, her in-game element is Aqua and she is an Attacker type.

As a magical girl, her magic comes from her Soul Gem. Her Soul Gem is similar to Twisted Wonderland's magestones except the Soul Gem literally contains her soul so destroying it would kill her, and separation after 100 meters would cause her to lose control of her body until the Soul Gem is returned to her, like a lich. The soul is in the Soul Gem so the magical girl will feel less pain in combat when taking damage that would leave regular humans in excruciating pain, out of commission, or possibly dead. They can open portals into Witch or Familiar's labyrinths. (For better information, see Puella Magi Wiki pages "Magic" and "Soul Gem".)

Common & Learned Magical Girl Abilities:
  • Magical Girl form/tranformation: They can change into magical girl form which comprises of an outfit unique to them.
  • Superhuman physical strength and abilities: This is the result of the separation of soul and body. If one chooses to, they can make themself immune to or cure physical ailments and illnesses, which North has opted into. They can still take damage during battle and will have to heal them but they don't experience as much pain compared to humans.
  • Summon weaponry: Magical girls can summon any weapon but tend to stick to one. They can also use magical energy blasts if not using a weapon. North can use the spear, quarterstaff, sword, shield, shovel, parasol, and multiple other weapons, even a steel chair. She's working on ranged magical weapons like the wrist-mounted crossbow and... gun despite her anti-firearms stance. She primarily uses the staff or spear sometimes with a shield.
  • Magic Seals: Has a variety of uses, platforms being one of them.
  • Defensive/Barrier magic: This isn't a well-known magic that magical girls can use. It can be learned if chosen to.
  • Magic Imbuement: This can enhance the object's function.
  • Telepathy: There is a maximum range but that range is unknown in canon.
  • Magic detection: She can detect the magic of other magical girls, Witches, and Familiars, each having magic signatures. This extends to the magic in Twisted Wonderland, being able to detect a presence or traces of magic which can be helpful while on the lookout for danger. Some magical girls can hide their magic so others can't detect it.
  • Connect: An ability that is dormant in magical girls and has to be unlocked by Adjusters to be usable. This ability allows magical girls to share their magic with other magical girls to perform a powerful team attack. Those lacking experience with this can accidentally get overwhelmed and lose control with their next magic attack. This ability is useful for those working in teams. In Twisted Wonderland, North is able to use Connect on other magic users but they have more difficulty controlling the surge in magic compared to Puella Magi. (For better information, see "Connect" on Puella Magi Wiki.)
  • Concealed Messages
Personal Magic/Abilities:
  • Ice Magic: Ice is her elemental specialization. North can use this to freeze the ground to mess with the terrain, build ice walls or spikes, and many other applications. Because of how ice works, she may be able to run around with wind or cold water.
  • Red Ribbon: The ability to summon red ribbons. North uses the ribbons for grappling hooks or tripwires. This ability is actually from Red's magic. Once Red comes back, North will still be able to summon ribbons and can choose to make them white or light blue but keeps them red. The red "bracelet tattoo" around her right wrist will remain and the two will be able to sense each other.
  • "Frozen Heart": If someone wants to know her Unique Magic, she would pretend that it's this. An attack where she injects ice magic into the target's body that gradually freezes/destroys them from the inside out. Because of its lethality and the fact that it can't be undone once used, she only uses it with intent to kill. There is no incantation because magical girls don't use incantations but if it did have an incantation, it would just be lyrics from "Frozen Heart". It can also be called "Snowgrave".
  • Survival: The Unique Magic born from North's wish. She doesn't know how it works or whether it's used actively or passively but it she sees it as an explanation for surviving an old teammate's attempt to turn her into a Witch, the fight against Hunter, or ending up in Twisted Wonderland instead of turning into a Witch.
After her arc with Kai:
  • Ability to read Witch runes and understand Witch/Familiar's dialogue to an extent. She cannot speak in Witch language but Kai can.
  • Summon one of Kai's Familiars (Marie or Wisp) as an ally for a few minutes at most.
  • Kai's Witch Labyrinth: She can enter and exit the labyrinth when she wants. She can bring other people into the labyrinth but doesn't because of how personal the place is.
  • "Hammerspace" inventory via Kai's labyrinth where she just sends the item to Kai's labyrinth. When she wants an item that's in the labyrinth, Kai just sends it to her. (Puella Magi Wiki mentions that Hammerspace is a learned ability but no source for that is stated)
  • Summoning Kai as a Witch to fight alongside her takes a ton of energy/Soul Gem impurities. It is very unlikely for a situation to warrant Kai's appearance.

Theme メフィスト (Mephisto) - 女王蜂 / QUEEN BEE

  • Because North's magic comes from her Soul Gem, she doesn't need a magestone. She still carries it because everyone else does and it would be weird if she didn't.
  • In her third year, she chooses Poison Making.
  • Rook's nickname for her is "Chevalier de Glace".
  • North has seen many Disney media and some of the source material that they're adapted from. Her favorite Disney Villain is Hades. Her favorite Disney Princess is Mulan because of her character overall and North's bias toward Asian characters, with Megara coming close despite being an unofficial princess.
  • She goes by "North", her magical girl alias, under the notion that her human self that existed prior to making the contract with Kyubey is dead. Her birth name and Cantonese name are still valid for use so if one needed her name to curse her or anything, they would need those names.
  • Other than English, she knows Cantonese and Mandarin. With her parents, she primarily speaks Cantonese and prefers it over Mandarin. Her family is from Hong Kong.
  • Her Cantonese name is 白愛雪. Her family name (baak6 in jyupting) means "white, pure, clear, unblemished, bright" or "empty, blank". The characters of her given name: (ngoi3) means "love, kindness, benevolence", and (syut3) means "snow". In Japanese, 白 has multiple readings for surnames and 愛雪 can be read as "Ayuki". Her last name would be written as Pak in English but when she has to take on a last name in Twisted Wonderland, she opts for Baak to get people to pronounce her last name "bahk" instead of "pack".
  • She has been to Hong Kong Disneyland.
  • North is bi/pan. As for gender, she's questioning as she was born and raised female but doesn't really perform gender even though she knows gender norms exist. She isn't open about her gender because NRC is an all-boys school and it's only after she graduates that she shows her pronouns on social media. While she's in NRC, others refer to her with he/him or they/them pronouns because they don't know she's not male.
  • When angered, she and the air around her turn cold, a side effect coming from her Witch form.
  • She got into roller skating because of Shadow the Hedgehog who skates in his running animation. She plans to recreate Shadow's air shoes.
  • She studied many subjects such as how to use weapons for combat, and physics, chemistry, biology, human anatomy, and science topics for magic-related purposes. She also watched anime, cartoons, and video games to see how magic or powers there are handled and try to do something similar.
  • North is the only occupant in her 4-person dorm room, as a reference to Anna's room being half-empty after Elsa moving into another room, and to hammer in the isolation. Theoretically, her teammates could occupy those spots in spirit. Sometimes, North thinks about the possibility of having a sleepover since the beds are free anyway. She's fine with being the only occupant as this means she can train without interference or witnesses.
  • North has to be banned from fighting Overblot victims... or fighting in general. Because she uses more physical combat than magic attacks which means the victim would land in the hospital and be required to take medical leave.
  • She loves cats, especially black cats to the point of having a black cat plushie named Shadow. She also sleeps with a weighted blanket.
  • She would be the type to make snowmonsters like in Calvin and Hobbes.
  • Her Magicam username is aurorastarlight. She tends to post photos taken at events and food either bought or cooked. She refuses to show her appearance on the internet and avoids posting photos with her to the point where if she is in the photo and has to post it, she censors it.
  • Her magic was adjusted, negating the need for Grief Seeds and making it so she won't turn into a Witch. Impurities can still build up in her Soul Gem but will disappear over time similar to how Blot does, but she's still careful to avoid getting her Soul Gem fully tainted. Because she is a Puella Magi, she cannot Overblot or have blot build up.
  • If someone tries to out her as not-male, she would go "just because I have a female body doesn't mean I'm female" to make them so uncomfortable about being called transphobic that they back down ala "Update about my German neighbour", the sequel to "How to deal with German neighbours". Gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss.
  • Some Pokemon associated with her would be Froslass, Alolan!Ninetales, Mismagius, Aegislash, Ceruledge, Beartic, and Vanillite. Her favorite Pokemon is Espurr.

  • Her "name" North can refer to either the North Star (aka Polaris) or the northern lights (aka aurora borealis)
  • North's black hair color comes from the concept art of "villain" Elsa who had black hair in some drawings... which influenced me to make North Asian and also twist her from Mulan.
  • There are multiple basis that North is twisted from, not just Elsa herself:
    • Mulan. Her 2020 counterpart is called "Asian Elsa" which is accurate and actually funny but I'm not pulling from the 2020 version. Animated!Mulan doesn't succeed in conforming to gender norms, poses as male in the army, and wins battles with her intelligence and quick thinking.
    • Kai from the original version of the "Snow Queen" story who had a mirror shard stuck in his left eye and later his heart. This influenced North's heterochromia/blue eye in her design.
  • Other character inspirations: Yachiyo Nanami (Magia Record), Shadow the Hedgehog, Leon Kennedy (Resident Evil series) Weiss Schnee (RWBY)
  • I made North 14 so there would be less reason for her to be a student through normal means and because the Madoka Magica characters are ~14. As is, North could be shipped with Najma Viper.
  • North was sorted into Ignihyde partly to fit with the isolation that Elsa had and the theme of death. She doesn't fit Heartslabyul, Savanaclaw, Octavinelle, Scarabia, and Pomefiore personality-wise so they're out. Diasomnia is known for magical apitude which even if North possesses, North despises the idea of being defined based on magic rather than the person because it would mean being either feared or seen as a means to an end. If she were to be sorted into another dorm, it would be Diasomnia.
  • Based on her age, she would be partway into 8th grade before she ends up in TWST. Luckily, canon NRC operates on high school logic.

Story

Puella Magi North Magica / Before TWST

She lived in New York City on Earth as an ordinary magicless human in a kind-of magicless world. The only thing magical about Earth was that the existence of magical girls is how humanity developed and became what it is today. One day, Kyubey appeared to her, offering a contract: he grants a wish and in exchange, she becomes a magical girl. She asks Kyubey many many questions and Kyubey obliges. She doesn't make the contract right away, thinking carefully about what to wish for.

It's cold. It's snowing. She can't move in this state. At this rate, she might freeze to death. Kyubey arrives. North makes the contract: "I wish to survive, no matter what happens, no matter what I become."

Early in her magical girl days, she wielded a sword and discovered her ice specialty. She chose the alias "North", not wanting to use her real name. North joins a team of magical girls. The three fight together until one teammates's Soul Gem is fully tainted and she turns into a Witch. The other teammate is in shock, leaving North to be the only one to fight the Witch. North defeats the Witch and the two demand an explanation from Kyubey. Once Kyubey tells them, the other teammate attempts to kill North only to be killed herself. Clara arrives decides to take North under her wing and she meets Red. North then would often research about combat, physics, the human body, ice, and multiple subjects to improve herself as a magical girl. North also begins keeping a diary for her magical girl activity that would act as a memoir should she die, and a city map and spreadsheet to log and mark Witch hunts. Knowing that she will die and the world will move on without her, she chooses to tell her story even after death in that diary. Part of her knows that the world of magical girls will remain mostly secret though. If her parents find them, here's hoping they accept what happens.

North, Clara, and Red fight Witches together. Hunter, and later Em who Hunter brought as a potential magical girl, join the team. Clara then said that she had to be out for a while, rendering her absent for the events that took place after. After December 25th, Em seemingly disappeared. Red investigated and he and North found that Em turned into a Witch, and they slay it so she can rest. They then out that someone intended for North's team to turn into Witches so a different team of magical girls could turn the city into a Witch farm, and Hunter was actually part of that team. While North and Red fight Hunter, Red takes a hit meant for North and supposedly. North drives Hunter to turn into a Witch from running out of magic and then kills off the other team. After that, North fights alone. If she doesn't team up with anyone, she won't have to lose anyone ever again.

December 31st. A light snowfall. Night. Her Soul Gem is completely tainted. Whatever happens from there, she does not turn into a Witch. The carriage departs for Night Raven College with North in tow. The process messes with her memories which is why she doesn't go Witch hunting in Twisted Wonderland or despair over her past. She still remembers being a magical girl, but some events don't resurface right away.

Prologue: Welcome to the World of Villains

North wakes up in the Mirror Chamber. She senses magic, magic that doesn't belong to a Witch, Familiar, or magical girl, which means she isn't in a labyrinth. She leaves and makes it out of the main building but runs into Sam before she can reach the main gate. Sam brings her to the Sorting Ceremony which is about to begin. North, having no choice, follows the freshman and the Dark Mirror sorts her into Ignihyde. Looks like she's a student then...

Book I

The beginning of the semester is pretty normal for her. Because she isn't from Twisted Wonderland, she takes it upon herself to self-study to catch up with her peers. She hides her superhuman abilities and magical girl side. Sam offers her an apprenticeship at his shop and she accepts. Sam basically takes her under his wing, helping her adjust to a new world.

Varius Trivia approaches her and latches onto her because they're in the same dorm and class. Days later, she overhears about Riddle's Overblot from other students and the concept of Overblots appear on her radar. She winds up researching about it and realizes how similar it is to the magical girl system. Later on, Varius and North agree to become partners where North helps Varius with his science projects and keep him grounded during lab sessions.

Book II

North isn't targeted as she isn't into sports, including Magical Shift. She assists Sam at the shop and spectates mainly to see the players' magic and evaluate how different it is from magical girls', not wanting to stand out when she uses her magic. While at the shop, she senses two magic signatures. She shouldn't know them, but it feels as if she should recognize them. On Halloween, she meets Astraeus, another person who she shouldn't know but can't help feeling something familiar.

Book III

North doesn't make a contract. She witnesses the anemones appear and the students being dragged to Octavinelle, but she decides not to go inside. She stays out of it. It has nothing to do with her and would only inconvenience her.

Book IV

North stays on campus as she has no home in Twisted Wonderland. Having nothing to do, she sets out to build a snowman... and runs into Jamil and an overexerted Rashad. She offers to take care of him and just like that, Jamil leaves him in her care. Rashad and her hang out while he recovers. At night, she meets Astraeus again and the two begin to chat over the course of multiple nights.

North isn't present for Jamil's Overblot. After the incident, Kalim hosts a party at the Scarabia dorm's oasis and Rashad invites her.

North attends the New Year's Eve celebration at Scarabia. And January 1st is her birthday. She never told anyone, not even Sam of her birthday. She celebrates her birthday in private.

Book V

North accompanies Varius to a tutoring session with Lucero Espinosa and for reasons unknown to her, feels as if Espinosa is someone she can trust, not knowing that he was Red's classmate. Espinosa senses Red's presence with her but can't delve into the topic. North and Astraeus continue to talk from time to time.

North attends the cultural festival as a student and audience member. After the festival, North and Astraeus dig up the time capsule Astraeus and Red buried long ago. Astraeus lets North have the time capsule for safekeeping.

Book VI

North goes through her arc where she enters Kai's labyrinth in her "dreams" for several nights.

North doesn't get involved with the whole S.T.Y.X. thing. She and Astraeus continue to be friends, and the topic of Red and her red "bracelet" eventually come to light. Problem is, they don't know what they can do.

Book VII

Kai pulls North into her labyrinth to save her from Overblot!Malleus, a labyrinth now based on the Night Raven College campus rather than the city she lived in prior to attending NRC. North has to camp out there for a while as there is no way she can fight Malleus. She wants to exploit that she is in a Witch barrier and that her Witch is around by pulling the others out of their dream and into the labyrinth but they don't as it would be too risky. And it is for reasons unknown to her. Had she fallen under the spell, the dream would be of her, Red, Clara, and Em attending NRC together and living in the same dorm room, but there would be too many discrepancies for the dream to last.

While in Kai's labyrinth, she and Astraeus meet Abigail who shows them Red's body which is in the process of recovering. Abigail, through the course of North's time in NRC, unironically grew to care for her, and has been trying to bring back Red since his "demise" by healing his body so his soul can reenter and unweave from North's to allow him to return as himself again. She stays in the labyrinth even while the fight against Overblot!Malleus goes down only to jump in to protect Varius.

Post-Freshman Year

  • Sandip adopts North so she has a home to go to
  • Karma is admitted to a hospital so he can recover
  • North meets the housewardens when Karma attended NRC
  • North attends the Floating Lights Festival with Varius
  • North gets support such as getting a cellphone and laptop for her use along with supplies, documents giving her an identity, and help with applying for scholarships
  • Abigail spends North's sophomore and junior year disguised as a cat to pose as her familiar and accompany her

Puella Magi Elpis Magica / Pandora Arc

For senior year, North has her internships. She has her second internship under Gizmo Glazier doing engineering at the Institute of Technology where Varius is also having his internship with TWST!Cornelius. Partway in, the sky changes, Witches appear, and an even larger Witch is the culprit.

Magical Girls must stay secret

After the events of Elpis Magica, North has to rest and recover from being awake and fighting for many hours without rest. She, Varius, and the other seniors soon graduate automatically due to the circumstances. Meanwhile, the existence of magical girls is under dispute. No one can deny seeing them fighting off Witches. Some comb their family trees, some try to identify the girls. North hates it. She doesn't want the world to know about magical girls, she doesn't want Kyubey returning and reviving the magical girl system, she doesn't want outsiders exploiting people with the magical girl system.

Miroslava (TWST!Milo Thatch) recruits her for an expedition in an attempt to uncover the existence of magical girls. The trip ends with everyone except Miroslava, Abigail, and North dead, and Abigail erases Miroslava's memory.

Relationships

Varius Trivia

Dormmates, classmates, and clubmates. North helps Varius with his projects to the point where she is basically his partner. The two are frequently paired up together for classwork. It's rather jarring to see them separate because of how often they're together. He's like the golden retriever to her cheetah. She cares for him dearly. Even though she worries about him becoming dependent on her in the future, she makes the most of her time with him. Because of his resemblance to Varian from "Tangled the Series", she has almost called him "Varian" and gone through identity crises multiple times.

Rufus Wood

A classmate and later friend from tutoring with Professor Espinosa. While it looks like Rufus is a third wheel when hanging out with her and Varius, North is actually trying to get him and Varius to become good friends so he has someone other than her to talk to which doesn't require much effort on her part when Varius is the one doing the most talking. North likes him but thinks he would prefer Varius' company over hers. Rufus thinks she's good but she tends to act distant. She can talk to Varius without a problem but with Rufus, she pushes him to interact with Varius instead.

Karma

North has been unknowingly carrying Red's soul since his supposed "demise", wearing a red "bracelet tattoo" since that night. Partway into the school year, she finds out that the Red residing in Kai's labyrinth is Red himself, his soul still holding on but they don't know the body's status. When he returns, North won't hesitate to have him as a roommate in her dorm. He'll tell her his real name but she'll still call him "Red" out of habit. The truth about their relationship is that they didn't know each other very well prior to the incident and absence makes the heart grow fonder. They were nearly killed once and North won't allow that to happen again.

Abigail Mallory

The Adjuster. They initially had a doctor-patient relationship back on Earth. After Red wakes up, Abigail shapeshifts into a cat so she can pretend to be North's familiar and stay with her. She becomes an aunt figure.

Sandip Gupta

Starting from her 2nd year, her martial arts teacher. He first noticed Red's presence on her during the Interdorm Magift Tournament but couldn't reach out without coming out wrong. Because she's a friend of Red and she brought him back to the gang, she is good in his book. He later officially adopts her so she has a home and family to go to.

Astraeus

Mutual friends. North supports Astraeus and Karma's relationship. He's strong enough to protect Red from harm.

Sam

The first person she met in Twisted Wonderland during her attempt to leave the campus. He later offered for her to work in his shop. She accepted and Sam became a mentor to her. Sometimes, North wonders whether or not she's repaying a debt by working for him over becoming a student because of him but keeps it at the back of her mind. She knows about his friends on the other side but is apathetic about it. His friends have detected Red's presence on her.

Jack Howl

A classmate who unintentionally brightens her day just by existing. North has a crush on him. Jack has a better personality than every other student. She can't help but get attached and trust him unconditionally, all while fighting the urge to go cuteness aggression on him. To Jack, she's "another" classmate. A good classmate, one he can work with without things going down in flames. If she talks about Jack, she ends up sounding like she has a crush on him even though she's not interested in entering a relationship.

Trey Clover

Clubmates! Trey feels like an older brother figure to her so she feels comfortable around him. Despite how she feels drawn to him, she can't help feeling some kind of emptiness inside as if Trey is substituting for something that left a void in her.

Lilia Vanrouge

Lilia sometimes brings her over to the Light Music Club where they hang out, or get her critique so the club can put something together. North has jokingly said "You're not my dad!" to him a few times and once gifted him a bat plushie.

Ortho Shroud

The two often meet when Ortho comes to buy Idia snacks during North's shift in the Mystery Shop. She always fights the urge to headpat him and wonders whether his hair is warm or burning hot. Sometimes when North sees Ortho, she can't help but think about the premise of Astro Boy. Part of her hopes that he isn't a robot replica of a now-dead Ortho... but she knows that's definitely the case. After Ortho becomes a student, they get to be proper friends. Ortho also gets her to interact with Idia in hopes of helping him make friends and deal with his social anxiety.

Idia Shroud

Idia originally had no reason to acknowledge her existence, but Ortho invited North over in an attempt to get Idia to make friends, and who better than the Ignihyde student that works at the Mystery Shop? The first meeting involved a lot of fighting the urge to pet his fire hair. If he ends up saying something insulting, North just replies "average cat behavior". She eventually grows on him and later gifts him a black cat plushie. He reminds her of a cat, a scrunkly, pathetic sopping wet in the rain, can't-resist-the-urge-to-pet cat.
