Twisted Wonderland

Twisted Wonderland

Summary

The crossover with "Puella Magi Madoka Magica" contains major spoilers concerning the magical girl system.

Twisted Wonderland is a world based on Disney Animated Canon. The story's central setting is Night Raven College, a prestigious magic school where students are chosen by the Dark Mirror based on magic potential.

Some OCs are part of a crossover with "Puella Magi Madoka Magica" and some aren't. The characters in the Cast tab are categorized based on whether or not they were designed to be part of the crossover. If you're looking at the profiles below by default sorting, profiles after "Minor TWST OCs" are of those involved in the crossover.

Puella Magi North Magica: A crossover between TWST and "Puella Magi Madoka Magica". North, a 14-year old Puella Magi, appears in Night Raven College with her Soul Gem permanently attached to her chest over her heart, even though she was supposed to die on Earth. After a night of following along with the Sorting Ceremony as a new student, she lives a new life where magic is a regular part of the world called "Twisted Wonderland". Hopefully she can live an ordinary life without becoming a child soldier all over again. North is not Yuu, instead being her own person with her own story.

The Many Miseries and One Hope: A part of the PMMM crossover taking place during North's 4th year where she is off-campus for an internship. A magical calamity takes place: A barrier covers the sky, and humanoid silhouettes are attacking mages. The next thing North knows, she detects magic belonging to Familiars, and a Witch has appeared at Night Raven College. While in the Labyrinth, she meets Elpis, a Puella Magi like her.

TWST x PMMM Lore

For another explanation of lore and terminology related to "Puella Magi Madoka Magica", see "Glossary" and "Magic" on Puella Magi Wiki. The Earth that North is from is the world of Witches, basically anime-verse. The crossover will include Adjuster lore from "Magia Record".

Terminology:
  • Puella Magi: The term used for magical girls from "Puella Magi Madoka Magica" to avoid confusion with magical girls either in general or the genre. This term is not used in-universe so everyone will use the term "magical girls" while descriptions use "Puella Magi". Unlike the magic users of Twisted Wonderland, their magic comes from their Soul Gems which are made during a contract with Kyubey. Because of the abilities that come with being a magical girl, they are physically more powerful than a regular human or mage, but not necessarily as magically powerful as those like Malleus Draconia.
  • Adjuster: A magical girl whose magic renders them unable to fight Witches, but can use their magic in a way that strengthens the Puella Magi's magic via tapping into their Soul Gem.
  • Witch: (Not to be confused with the archaic derogatory term for mages in TWST) Monsters that the Puella Magi fight, usually hiding in Labyrinths. While Puella Magi are born from wishes, Witches are born from curses. They prey on civilians' despair, lure them into Labyrinths or control them into committing violence via Witch's Kiss, and feed on them. Very few Witches can be powerful enough to not hide in a Labyrinth. On the basis of having a Labyrinth and Familiars, they are more dangerous than Overblot Phantoms one would find in the wild but not necessarily as dangerous as mages under the effects of Overblotting or the strongest Overblot Phantoms. It depends on which Witch and Overblot.
  • Familiar: (Not to be confused with mages' companions or partners) A Witch's minion. Can be independent from their Witch and have their own Labyrinth. If they eat enough people (possibly 4-5), they can turn into a Witch.
  • Labyrinth: A magical realm where Witches and Familiars reside, hidden away from the real world. Puella Magi can enter via magic while civilians can only end up there by being pulled in.
  • Kyubey: An alien creature who makes contracts where he grants people's wishes and turns them into Puella Magi. He is somewhat of a mentor figure.
Lore:
  • Puella Magi used to exist in Twisted Wonderland but slowly died out centuries or millenia ago.
  • Kyubey makes contracts with magicless people. I see no need for him to make contracts with those who already can use magic, even with those who have limited magic compared to others. I think making a contract while having magic would cause the two magic systems to conflict because of blot and lead to complications.
  • Puella Magi's magic and Twisted Wonderland's magic are somewhat compatible but have some differences. Blot and Soul Gem impurities are one of those differences. Whether or not Kyubey has been able to harness Blot crystals the same way as Soul Gem impurities and Grief Seeds is still up in the air. Maybe Blot and Soul Gem impurities just can't mix despite being produced the same way although they are in different forms. Soul Gems cannot contain Blot and magical crystals cannot contain Soul Gem impurities.
  • Even though Kyubey has stopped making contracts, he's still in Twisted Wonderland, watching. He is also observing Night Raven College which has experienced multiple Overblots in one school year. He only observes and gathers Blot crystals, letting everyone do the work for him. He finds S.T.Y.X. useful and also observes them to pick up on their findings but thinks the Overblot Phantoms should be utilized as opposed to being locked up. Why he stopped making contracts long ago remains unknown but it is possible that he is looking into Blot instead...
  • There was tension between Puella Magi and mages/magic users in the past.
  • Puella Magi's brand of pridefulness and arrogance that mages tend to have can range from "we are the hunters that eat the monsters that prey on weak civilians so without us, the civilians would be dead and they should be grateful" to "mages are weak compared to us" to "nobody understands our pain" to Puella Magi supremacy.
  • There are few surviving records of Puella Magi, mainly mentions of people miraculously having magic or experience some kind of miracle or mysterious disappearances. Historians' attempts of researching, writing, and publishing works about the Puella Magi have been unsuccessful. The closest to a published work would be either self-published or a manuscript somewhere collecting dust. It would be very unlikely to find someone interested in the Puella Magi at all. There's also the fact that Puella Magi tend to keep their magical girl status secret from everyone, and the lack of available sources for investigation and study.
  • Kyubey was a subject of worship to outsiders who knew of Puella Magi. Some considered him to be higher than the Sea Witch which caused discourse with those having nothing to do with Puella Magi. Artifacts and records of him can't be found as Puella Magi have sought them out and destroyed them, making them lost media. There may be a surviving piece sitting somewhere, possibly in a museum but lacking sufficient information.
  • One town exploited Kyubey's contract making a la Magia Record's "Green Jasper Diviner" event, by having candidates make wishes instructed to them by the town leaders so the wish would benefit either the town or the leaders. Puella Magi were considered protectors against curses that the Witches brought until the leaders found out how Witches come to be. After the revelation, policy changed and the Puella Magi would be killed some point after making their contracts, ensuring that the leaders' wishes would be granted and that no new Witches would appear. That town was later destroyed, most likely by a Witch. This town was a popular topic for some time after that, experiencing so many miracles and later being wiped off the map completely to the point that not even documents about the Puella Magi can't be found. Going there would cause visitors to feel a sense of dread and despair that would lead to them being lured into a Labyrinth as Witch food or cause blot to build up in magic users but this stopped being the case after Elpis arrived and eliminated the Witches there.
  • The Underworld, where the dead go, has noticed that Puella Magi weren't showing up after they died (because their souls either corrupted from Witchification or disappeared when their Soul Gems shattered) and making less souls arrive in the Underworld than there should be. If the Law of Cycles were around, the Puella Magi would go there first rather than the Underworld when they die. Those working for the Underworld are aware of Puella Magi because some mortals were affiliated with them prior to their deaths. The Fates can't cut Puella Magi's strings of life because the strings either cut on their own when their Soul Gems shatter or turn into Grief Seeds or won't cut when their lives are saved by contract with Kyubey or magic, which has frustrated them.

Cast

Their role is to make the setting feel more alive, and canon less stupid and bare-bones. To Yuu and the player, they're mob characters. Those without their own profiles can be found in "Minor TWST OCs" as that is meant for concepts being written down instead of being left in thought and forgotten, or OCs that I don't have enough information to make a profile for.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica x TWST

A crossover with "Puella Magi Madoka Magica" because of the similar magic systems and PMMM lives in my head-rent free. Those deeply involved with the crossover or its characters, or designed to be part of the crossover are included here. Non-crossover characters can interact with or have crossover characters like North involved in their story but whether or not the crossover plays a substantial role in their story determines whether or not they're listed here instead of above. The Dorm Leaders from Karma's time are included here because they're mainly associated with Karma but can be listed above.

  • Puella Magi North Magica: North, Karma, Abigail, Astraeus Kramer, Lucero Espinosa
  • Puella Magi Elpis Magica / Pandora Arc: Elpis, North, Karma, Abigail
