Once a promising, well sought-after Private Investigator at the height of his career- a nightmarish encounter would lead to the dissolution of his credibility; and as his colleagues continued question his mental soundness, so would he.

Personality.

What you see is more or less what you get. Disheveled and slovenly, Dick insists a great many things- that he cleans up just fine, knows exactly what he's doing, and doesn't care about what other people think. For those who are in-the-know, Richard Ramsey used to be a highly intelligent individual whose innate communication and problem-solving skills made him a valuable asset to any homicide investigation. Nowadays, Dick purports himself as lackadaisical and uninspired, no longer caring about the intellectual game of investigation-- only about how he's meant to pay his bills.

To those who know Dick- he's definitely fallen from grace, but he still has his passionate touch. His acts err towards heroic with regards to what he's willing to do for a client in need- but in terms of personal interactions, he holds little pretense and can come off as mean-spirited. He calls himself a realist, but it seems more like he swings between wanting to chase after idealism yet being too afraid to spout anything other than cynicism.

Trivia.

  • Constantly has his license confiscated and suspended.
  • Allergic to romantic commitment. Doesn't like dating around, but will often get entangled with his clients despite conflicts of interest.
  • Early riser.
  • Donates a small amount of money to church despite not having much to spare. Sometimes down to the pennies.

Background.

traits

Easily irritable, inhibited, heroic

ideology

I'm stable and capable, and all I have to do is crawl out of this shallow hole I've dug. Everyone has problems in life. I can overcome mine. People who say I can't are either nihilists or delusional. Just because I don't have anything to show for it yet, doesn't mean I've failed.

significant people

His interns, who parted amicably following their college graduations- prior to his loss in reputation.

meaningful locations

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Duis sollicitudin elit sed tellus blandit viverra sed eget odio.

treasured possessions

Craft watch gifted to him by his biological father. A boat-in-a-bottle. Not on person, obviously.

phobias & manias

Dick Ramsey is a very stable individual that doesn't get testy or defensive when having his sanity questioned or tested. Pretty normal. He thinks gophers look freaky, also.

injuries & scars

Various shallow lacerations on hands and body. Thin cut over left side of lip. Unknown origin.

contacts

The Ramseys. Quincey Carter, employee. ...I don't know, God?

History.

tldr: A Japanese-American boy would be taken in by an affluent family in order to aid in his studies, and also to fill the lack of a son in their own house. He'd gradually drift apart from his biological parents. As an adult, he would become a private investigator with skills unparalleled. However, a strange and disorienting encounter that he still struggles to remember the details of would prove to continuously bear negative impacts on his life. Feeling caged-in, Dick decides to move operations to another city in order to feel rebuild his credibility, and feel normal again.

Because really, really, he was normal. No matter how many people suggested otherwise.

A Japanese-American born to immigrant parents, the earlier parts of Richard's life were spent being raised in the quaint community of San Francisco's Japantown. The sparse memories he'd have of this period in his childhood would be warm if not uneventful, as his parents laboured to provide the three of them a modest life from the profits from their restaurant. An exceptional twist would occur in his life at age 4, when a particularly affluent couple- regulars and family friends at that point in time- offered to sponsor him for his schooling. Such an offer was essentially more like a foster aggreement.

The Ramseys would take Dick in for lodging and support his needs financially. Such a generous offer, while done largely out of philanthrophy, still came with the conspicuous undercurrent of an ulterior motive- that is, The Ramseys could not produce a child of their own, and adoption routes were still a bit obfuscated at the time.

Dick would essentially be raised as one of their own. He recalls seeing his biological parents for the holidays as a child- enough to recall the vague ebbs of their facial featuers, and their adoration for him through their behavior towards him. As he grew older, however, he found visiting them to come less and less. There were times in his youth where he'd inquire about them, but found his foster parents to be both placating yet blase about the matter. Dick wouldn't press the subject. A combination of his age and priorities at the time- Dick didn't think much about his biological family. Not for better or worse.

Fast forward to adulthood- a time where Dick has grown into himself, into his profession, and away from his origins. Having such affluent parents in all but name- Dick's interests were supported wholeheartedly by the Ramseys. Leaving college with a focus in journalism and criminal justice, Dick founded a small, independant private investigation firm. Some may consider the venture to be a waste of his intellect and skills, but Dick's parents- the Ramseys, that is- were very supportive of his interests.

Life went on from there- with Dick growing his business and establishing a name for himself. He definitely hit his stride due in part thanks to the monetary support of the Ramseys, but his own skills were what won him case after case. By a good half of a decade, Dick became a well-recognized and appreciated individual in the local area.

In short- Dick's career came to a crashing nosedive. He doesn't like to talk about it anymore. The time's he's tried to explain it over to others- both in a clinical and personal setting- have all failed. It's hard to reconcile how vicerally Dick felt in danger on the scene of some crime he'd been contracted by the local police station to cooperate with investations for; words, in all of his eloquence, often fell short. If Dick explained that he felt like there were eyes on him-- several-- or that there appeared to be something moving in the shadows- his plight would just get dismissed as symptoms of psychosis. Dick would ardently refuse to acknowledge the wounds on his own body as self-inflicted despite how many times the logic didn't add up for any other case or explanation; he was the detective, why couldn't he conjure up the evidence then? Because there wasn't any. Because he couldn't remember.

Needless to say, the Ramseys, while concerned in their old age, supported their son no matter what- even down to getting psychiatric help. It's only a shame that he refused to take medication or go through further screening, insisting that although the bizarre story and accustations he made in fact made no sense; no other reality was true. The amount of time he took off work to recover his nerves was short- but the news and his dwindling performance spread fast.

Knowing that his reputation was pretty much failing him and that his foster parents were not receptive to his odd perspective, Dick decides to shut down the office and move somewhere else for a change of speed. Preferably, somewhere where his crapped-up reputation didn't precede him. Preferably, somewhere where others believed in him as much as he stubbornly believed in himself.

It's only then when Dick starts to think about his biological parents, and really wonders where they are. Still in San Francisco? Were they in good health? ...Did they still miss him or think about him? They're only a stone's throw away from Tinsel Town- where his new office was situated- but he doesn't have the heart to go check.

Kid's bright. He also doesn't complain when his paycheck's an I-O-U.

Gerald Bancroft
Business Relationship

Man sucks me dry, and not even in the fun way. ....I really hope he doesn't try the fun way. Actually.

When Dick says he knows a guy, he's actually talking about Mr. Bancroft, the guy who knows all the guys. Either out of convenience or lack of alternative routes due to his poor reputation- Gerald provides services and resources for Dick. For a price, of course. Always a price. God forbid he just does a friend a solid for onc-
