BACKSTORY:

Selwyn was born into a wealthy family in Victorian England. His mother was a tailor and his father owned a large business. Selwyn himself had dreams of becoming a famous musician. He was 27 when he was attacked by a vampire and Turned against his will. He ended up fleeing onto the streets when his family proved unable to accept the change.

At first, he was very disorientated and barely knew how to survive. An older vampire named Montague found him and become his mentor, although he was abusive and deceitful. Selwyn eventually left him.

What followed was years of surviving alone and avoiding vampire slayers before he encountered Evelyn, the informal leader of Europe's vampire population. She was the first person he had met in decades who treated him kindly, and she has worked hard since then to gain his trust.

A man with an aura of pride and nobility, Selwyn has never forgotten his roots, and this reflects in his courteous manner and eloquent speech. He can be theatrical, often using unnecessary words and dramatic gesticulations when he talks. He never raises his voice when angry, preferring to radiate a quiet sense of menace.

Selwyn has a love-hate relationship with his own vampirism. He enjoys the power and mystique, but hates the fact that he was forced to leave his family and dreams behind. As a result of bad experiences, he mistrusts both humans and other vampires, and therefore lives a solitary (and almost completely nocturnal) existence. He has embraced the life of a vampire, but still harbours some bitterness over his forced change. There are very few people he willingly spends time with.

Despite his elegant speech giving an impression of politeness, Selwyn does have ways to express contempt for others. He can be bitingly sarcastic, patronising, and superior. He takes pride in his appearance and likes expensive clothes. His pride is often his downfall; he hates showing weakness to the point of hiding problems from people who care about him.

DESIGN:

Selwyn is a relatively tall man with short, dark brown hair, very pale skin, and red eyes. He tends to dress formally, with a fondness for buttoned shirts, dark jackets and cravats.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Evelyn

The first vampire to treat him with kindness. Selwyn still occasionally struggles with trusting Evelyn, but he is immensely protective of her and would sacrifice himself for her if necessary.

Olivia

A human girl who, following a chance encounter, attached herself to Selwyn out of a desire to see more of the supernatural world. Selwyn initially resented and mistrusted her, but gradually grew fond of her. Their relationship is similar to a father and daughter.

ABILITIES:

Selwyn has the same general abilities as other vampires in my world. These include high strength and reflexes, powerful healing, and the ability to shapeshift into animals. His preferred animal form is a German Shepherd.

His healing ability allows him to recover from most injuries, no matter how severe, with no lasting damage. However, he can't completely regrow missing body parts - and as such, being decapitated or losing vital organs would kill him. Wood is poisonous to him. Sunlight and garlic have no effect.

TRIVIA:

- Skilled pianist and a naturally good singer. Can read music and occasionally composes.

- He grew up with three brothers, one of which was an identical twin.
