Background

Inoxiam is a 15 year old Sylvari Order of Whispers agent, stationed within the Nightmare Court to help tear it down from the inside. A pod-twin, he awoke alongside Tryllwenn from a conjoined pod that left them with a strong sense of connection to one another. In his dream, Inoxiam had seen a dark court fall, and believed that it was his purpose to destroy the Nightmare.

When the two were near a year old, Inoxiam was taken into the Order, and soon given his first assignment within the Court. To make sure things went off without problem, Inoxiam had to commit to the lie--which tore his twin away from him. Tryllwenn couldn't forgive him for choosing Nightmare and cut ties, leaving Inoxiam to face his burden alone. His first mission was a disaster--unable to bear what he witnessed Courtiers doing to innocents, Inoxiam snapped and tried to raze the court himself. He was unsuccessful, but was pulled out of the disaster by the Whisper's Keeper in charge of him, and returned to training.

Within a few years, he was used to it, though no less sickened by his burden. He was an expert at destroying pieces of the court from within. He changed names and identities at each new assignment, taking on new pseudonyms like a second skin, like a glove. It was easy to forget who Inoxiam was at his base-- thought he never lost sight of the mission, at some point it was hard to know what he was fighting for.

When he was 10, he was assigned to Twilight Arbor, to topple Faolain's court and hopefully tear away the foundation. Unfortunately, a target was painted on his back--though none of the agents within the court knew each other, or could recognize one another as Whisper's agents, a courtier accused of spying pointed fingers, and Inoxiam was one of the unlucky few caught. He was tortured for days, slipping in and out of awareness as his Court superiors tried to glean information from him-- once he was deemed useless, he was dumped in the wilderness to die. Again, his Whisper's Keeper pulled him from the wreckage of his mission, and he spent half a year recovering physically from the torment. His time at the Whisper's HQ was spent mostly in solitude; he had no friends among the Order anymore, none who could understand why he would willingly go so deep, and his fresh scars were frightening to others.

A full year after the Arbor, he was assigned to Lionsbane Copse, given the name Datura. It was here that the Duke of Torment lived; one of Faolain's old darlings, secondborn Eldulis. Equipped with a unique ability to peel minds, to peer past lies and deceit into the layer of truth beneath, Eldulis was to be Inoxiam's most formidable target yet. In preparation for facing him, he readied his mind with a layer of fog, allowing himself to slip out of his state of awareness and into a sub-ego, one which believed himself a true courtier.

He spent a few months lying low, but Eldulis was used to kissing up; he took an interest in Inoxiam if only for his staunch refusal to involve himself with the Duke. This careful dance around Datura's identity made it difficult to maintain his sense of self; he'd go hours in a fog of sub-ego, only to awaken at home with bloodied hands and no recollection of what had transpired under the Duke's gaze. He knew he needed out again, and was readying himself to call for his Whispers Keeper-- but Eldulis beat him to the punch, calling on him to accompany him to Twilight Arbor for the Dark Vigil, where he was to take Faolain's old place.

Journeying to the Arbor, Eldulis cornered Inoxiam while vulnerable and used his ability. Peeling into Inoxiam's subconcious, he visited the memories of torture Inoxiam had suffered at the Arbor they were heading to now. He backed out without seeing further, acknowledging that he knew Inoxiam's name now, and that he (mistakenly) understood that he had been framed at the Arbor.

Separated at the Arbor, Eldulis was taken to undergo the Dark Vigils, and Inoxiam was left to drink and make merry with the lower courtiers. Half-drunk at a game of cards, he learned that Eldulis was not the first to be lined up for Faolain's old position, and that he was certain to be killed soon-- if not during the trials he was going through now. Inoxiam, who had unfortunately developed some sort of fondness for Eldulis, bid goodnight and headed back to their rooms. He found Eldulis drunk and delirious, panicking and refusing to be alone. Inoxiam realized quickly that Eldulis was not drunk, but had been poisoned during his trials, and that he had a short window of time in which to decide and act.

Trivia
  • His feelings for Eldulis are complicated. After weeks by his side, he's opposed to killing him. He sees Eldulis as a frightened sapling, someone very lonely, and someone with few options.
  • He wouldn't recognize Tryllwenn if he saw him, despite their faces becoming identical. He remembers his podtwin fondly, but sees no future in which they'll ever reconnect.
  • Incredibly lonely whenever he's at the Whispers HQ. His Keeper is his only real connection, and they aren't exactly buddies.
  • In some way, his sympathies for Eldulis probably mirror his feelings about his own situation. Immature, lonely, forced to make decisions that he can't control adequately, certain to be killed like a dog if he disobeys.
  • He's incredibly sneaky. It takes a special kind to catch him in a lie.
