About

⚰️ The lonely steward of a rural funeral parlor. Archimedes is a Grem as obscure and ostensibly serene as the countryside around him. One would hardly notice a shift in the sombre settings between the mist-laden pastures nearby, and taking a step into the reception area of his establishment.

PERSONALITY

Silent ◆ Astute ◆ Perfectionist ◆ Easily embarrassed ◆ Solemn ◆ Agitated
In spite of his quiet, Archie takes a lot of pride in his jobwork. He's very private about his emotions, expressing himself little in his earnest thoughts. He'll turn defensive at teasing, but he isn't exactly contented feeling so delicate in himself. It leaves him far too flimsy in his accomplishments when they are undermined by his own vulnerable mental state. Archie therefore strives to be unbothered by pesky people and pesky circumstances. Those that are cruel to him will earn his stern resentment, bridled for the sake of professionalism. In regards to his owner, however, he is utterly obsequious, daunted by even a raised voice.

JOB / HOBBIES

Archimedes works as an undertaker in a privately owned facility, conducting embalming procedures and arranging funeral plans. In his off-time, he strives to discover any activity pleasant enough to ease his general stress. Loves reading informational texts and watching television documentaries. He's yet to acquire a taste for fiction, but he makes vague effort to delve into it once in a blue moon; he rejects any macabre themes however, finding them vapid. He does very small oil paintings infrequently, of life subjects and scenery. He bemusedly collects the variety of items his dear raven, Page, presents him.

HISTORY

Named Archimedes by Jesse, the father of his legal owner. Archie's most meaningful connection was presented in a fleeting year of knowing the human by his bedside. Although his intended purpose was to tend the family business, the Grem also gravitated towards care for the enfeebled elder. It's a cryptic notion to him that he came to be deeply endeared to someone that was so dismissed in his dying months — by those Archie was predestined to serve.

Archie recalls his perception of the Goble family being solidified very early on. If it wasn't the multitude of times lights were shut off on him as he still lingered in rooms behind them, he came to realize loneliness in arranging the burial alone. In the end of the bitter process, their open expressions of relief at the patriarch's passing inspired righteous fury in the Grem. He feels he has no right to loathe the loved ones of Jesse, and thus masks true feelings around them. It is a lingering enmity he often ponders the rationality of.

Once the mortician business was handed over to Jesse's successor, they worked alongside each other for some strained few years. Idle moments of conversation never passed between them. Memories of Jesse's complaints about pests in the house became a quick association with Claude Goble. Archie was steadily immersed in more of his owner's tasks until the man abandoned it all entirely to him, without the Grem ever desiring the immense responsibility. Maybe comfort could have been gained in being possessor of the business's fate. However, Claude refused to sign it over or release Archie, pressing for continued efficiency from the facility's now one and only caretaker.

Archimedes was henceforth sealed within his solitary profession. It is both solace and anguish on his mind. But after decades of tolerating the isolation, he has grown to bear its weight. The malaise remains ever haunting him, casting a shadow over what it means to feel at peace.

Tae  [ dear friend ]

Archie never fancied superstition. Mentions of the supernatural, especially in the context of his job, always vexed his partisan self. His hardened distaste for such notions maybe was what stunted his reaction when a curious case sprung to motion mid-procedure. As he was a Grem dedicated to the deceased, Archie came to assume strange custody over Tae — befuddled as he was. He can't say for himself what prompted him to keep the Cypherus a secret. Loneliness, or compassion perhaps? The undead Grem's presence has been all too blissful for him, and easily hid from all others' eyes.

Page  [ companion ]

A wild raven Archie had the odd fortune of befriending on the mortuary grounds. She's hung around for nearly the past decade, providing ample opportunities for a familiarity to flourish between them. Archie would argue that she is not a pet by any means, and what they've formed is something arguably symbiotic. For years she has been his glimpse into something social and sympathetic. In his more melancholic moments, she shows up to console him — at least, what he perceives. She is more than deserving of such a suspicion of generosity than anyone else he has known.
