Samael Hartford is a well-known figure for both her academic work on the foundations of artifactual magic and her use of her artifact, Heaven’s Splinter, to vanquish the Godbane known as Antares. She is revered by many for these feats, and hated with just as much fervor by others. One of these enemies includes the leader of the Cult of the Red Star, who resents her for imprisoning their deity.

Samael herself is austere, her very presence demanding the respect of her fellow magic charges and of the general public. This legacy is not something she carries lightly, or wishes to affect her one and only child, Hanah. She tends to avoid the attention due to her modest sensibilities as well as for her child’s sake.
