The reincarnation of a hero from long ago. His only goal is to defeat Ganondorf, the one who he's in an endless cycle fighting.

During an expedition, they come across the petrified corpse of Ganondorf, unable to recognize him due to his state, and being attacked when it reanimates. The Master Sword is shattered, and Zelda gets the Secret Stone, sending Link and the stone into the past due to this. Ganondorf falls to The Depths, and Zelda escapes with Rauru's arm.

Back in the past, Link has to figure out how to navigate the past with a Secret Stone he doesn't know how to use, watched over by the King who's destined to both create Hyrule, and be the same reason that it falls.
