"IT IS BEAUTIFUL TO BE TOGETHER AND IT IS AWFUL TO BE CHAINED."

In this universe, Buttercup's stay in Tartarus was much longer. When he finally returned, he was... different. Wrong. He had rotted, just as many had told him to before.

A week or so after being killed by ROT, Lottie finally respawned. She did not understand what had happened at first, not to her nor the others ROT had killed, but eventually she focused all her efforts into necromancy.
The first one to be attempted was, of course, Casey - and with crucial help from a kind stranger, it worked. Lottie was able to revive him, but he was still mortal, and a ghost is not meant to live on for so long. It brought him back time after time, sacrificing more and more of itself. Casey became less and less lively with each ritual, and his lifespan grew shorter and shorter.

Afraid of another slaughter but determined to track down ROT, Lottie had a thought: What happens if you perform necromancy on something already living? Of course, it can't be healthy... certainly not a long-term solution. But against all odds, Lottie somehow gained effective immortality. The cost, unfortunately, was its mind; with each ritual, it became stranger. In contrast to Casey's weariness, Lottie became eccentric and forgetful.

Eventually, after many rituals on both parties, Casey's life began to fade once more. But this time, gazing into Lottie's eyes, he pleaded with her.
"You've done enough. This is it. I love you. Goodbye."
Wracked with grief, distraught at watching her love perish in her arms like he did all those years ago, Lottie recited the spell against his wishes.

There was not much left of him by now. Nor was there much left of Lottie. The remaining parts of each of them had to compensate for what was lost over time. Not unlike a covalent bond between atoms, their magically charged souls merged into one.

Owing their life to the kind stranger known as RAPTURE, they decided on a new name for themselves: DISCIPLE.
