BACKSTORY

Nestling
Argus was born in a mining village on the eastern side of the Mountain Kingdom. The village was so small that the residents never really bothered naming it, instead giving it the simple moniker of Homestead. Argus had two older siblings; Thetis and Atala, three years his senior, and one younger brother, Skipper, who hatched two years after him. Their mother Moth worked as a hunter, supplying meat for the town’s market, and their father Metalmark was a storehouse guard at a garrison near the northern border. Neither of them spent much time at home, so Argus was mostly raised by his older siblings who both had jobs in Homestead.

Fledgeling
When Argus was still quite young, his father returned from the border, injured grievously in a raid. Hearing of this, Moth returned early from her current hunting expedition to look after her mate. She became downright possessive, forcing the children out of the house for most of the daylight hours. Despite all of her hard work, Metalmark died of an infection only a few weeks after his arrival. At the time Argus was a bit too young to have a full understanding of the situation, but he knew that their mother became intensely moody afterwards and began taking on longer and longer hunting trips. Because of his mother’s absence and being too young to start school, Argus took to following his older siblings at their workplaces, getting to know the townspeople and learning the very basics of a few different professions. He made a habit of observing people for fun and to pass the time, until he reached the appropriate age to start his schooling in earnest.

Subadult
Getting an early start on his schooling, Argus showed promise in reading and physical training. He was eager to learn and applied himself with passion to each new subject their teachers introduced. Unlike the other kids, Argus often brought his schoolwork home with him to entertain himself. Spending a lot of his time after school studying didn’t really help his social life, but Argus didn’t mind much, instead making pals with the various work friends of his siblings. He also found it difficult to express his emotions to his peers, often coming across much more intense than intended because of his large teeth and unsettlingly bright blue eyes.

Young Adult
Having heard the older workers in town talking about the contagion of soldiers that had recently been assigned to protect the mine from raids, Argus grew more and more curious to see them in action. Tagging along with some of the other young avus in town who had been given permission to visit, he made the short flight to where the soldiers were camped, just outside the mouth of the mine’s main tunnel. While the others were admiring the metal weapons and armor, Argus slipped back into his people-watching, seeing the many different kinds of dromaeus working together in gorgeous harmony, no one having less to do than the others. It was then that Argus knew he wanted to become a part of the army. Being his own direct self, Argus took up the issue of enlisting with the first higher ranking soldier he could catch the attention of. Initially they were turned away as just another kid making an impulsive choice based on a whim. Not to be dissuaded, Argo took to hanging around the soldiers, making excuses of bringing in lunches from Homestead or earning a little coin as a rat-catcher in the mine. Eventually, in the small hours of the morning, the long expected raid took place. Argo was caught up in the skirmish, having once again been loitering in the vicinity, trying to talk his way into joining the troops. Having used the heavy, dark clouds rolling over the peaks as cover for their approach, the hippus and harpies descended quickly and completely without warning on the surprised Mountain Kingdom soldiers. Argus was knocked over and almost trampled early on by a large, hooved avus, but just in the nick of time, a black dromaeus in hastily thrown-on armor lept on them and Argus was able to regain his footing. In an adrenaline fueled frenzy he latched his jaws around the base of the leg that barely missed his head and squeezed hard. Scared for his life, yet oddly calm and clear headed, Argus’s ears were filled with the hollow crunch of bone and a throbbing heartbeat. The large soldier collapsed, almost dragging Argus to the ground with them. Regaining her composure almost immediately, the black dromaeus captain, Tide, led the young roo into the fighting, the two taking on multiple soldiers before a retreat order had the invaders take to the sky. After a very brief chase, more for show than anything else, the soldiers regrouped at the mine. Argus had indeed distinguished himself in the battle, although Tide put it down to his unprofessional (and unexpected) recklessness and a healthy dose of beginner’s luck. However, she could not dismiss him so easily after that and eventually agreed to personally become his mentor, seeing promise in his level-headedness and interest in the tactical side of warfare.

Mature Adult
Argus moved with his mentor to Preyma after she was recalled from Homestead and enrolled in a training program on her recommendation. Two years of intense studying and battle practice later, he graduated with high marks and was assigned as a Sergeant. He led multiple advances and guerilla missions with competency, but was particularly renowned for his ability to never have his contagion pinned down by an enemy. By the time he was considered for the position of Captain, he had one of the best records of any commander with regard to the number of surviving soldiers in his flights. With this achievement under his belt and a direct recommendation from the retiring captain, Tide, he was considered an obvious pick for the rank. Argo first met his wife while deployed near the north-western Plains Kingdom border. His company was stationed at a small village called Goldmeadow, where he happened to visit a bakery while asking around about the lay of the land. Him and the golden furred avus behind the counter found each other quite fascinating, the two soon realizing they had much in common. Her name was Rhubarb and Argus was particularly smitten with her beautiful and bubbly laugh. The two soon fell for each other and after the half-year deployment, Argus and Rhubarb moved to Preyma together and got a house of their own. (Up to then, Argo had been staying at the complimentary military housing.) Completing their little family, Argus and Rhubarb’s adopted daughter Coal has been the apple of their eye. As a father, Argus has not been able to spend nearly as much time with his daughter as he’d like due to his heavy workload, but has been delighted to see that Coal has not been nearly as lonely as he was a young avus, making fast friends with many good natured people. He treasures the hunting trips they take together, and is proud to see all the progress she has made over time (even if he still thinks she has some things to learn, like any dad). Since the war has transitioned to a tenuous peace, Argus has been focussing mostly on the rebuilding efforts. The war devastated the Mountain Kingdom to it’s roots and he knows it will take a lot of time and effort to begin the healing and avoid setbacks. Luckily, a lifetime of diligent work has given him a level head and will to put in the hours. He pulls a triple shift as Captain, Rhubarb's assistant baker and a hunt organizer/leader, leaving very little personal time. But, in the end, he believes that by putting in the hours now that they have a chance, their kingdom will once more rise from the ashes of calamity.
