A being not of this world, Yurei is often treated like an elusive legend by the locals of Japan. They’re considered something ethereal, as well as something that should not be messed with. As cold as they are wise, this dainty is also treated like a God in the eyes of the locals, often leaving offerings at the shrine at the foot of the mountain where they are said to reside.

For those who have encountered this deity, it often comes as a surprise that they take the primary form of a dainty. Yurei often takes the form of a dainty to not intimidate visitors, but more often than not they are still unnerved at the sight of this real life legend. However, those who don’t fear them often come for advice, searching for them higher in the mountains. Not much is known about them otherwise, but locals who have encountered this legend have said that comprehending Yurei is something they’ve never fully understood. They are a legend shrouded in mystery.

Origin

Even though they have been alive for thousands of centuries, Yurei still remembers large parts of their past in extremely delicate detail. Yurei was a deity born from the public wish for good fortune and health through the harsh winter. When they first appeared, they were treated more like a rumor. Though very elusive, it’s said that whoever came in contact with Yurei was blessed with good fortune and health- like how the public wished. Soon enough they were revered as a deity, the Japanese building shrines at the foot of the mountain where they roamed. Locals came to pray and ask for their immense wisdom, leaving offers in return. Even though they were looked up to as some kind of God, others feared Yurei and looked at them as some kind of demon. Some locals say that Yurei is the one who created or inspired the yuki-onna yōkai spirits.

Current

Currently, Yurei’s exact residence is unknown to humans, but they’ve spent their entire life wandering and circling Mount Fuji. Very rarely they appear before locals anymore, but when they do it’s because they are still thankful for the offerings even after thousands of years. They still offer their wisdom to locals who ask for it. They’ve become scarce due to The Great Astral War, which is the still ongoing war between Gods. Yurei gave themselves the job of a reaper during this period, guiding souls to rest after death. They chose not to politically involve themselves in the war, but instead still stays where they have always been.
