C ypress attended med school right on track. he had never been an overachiever or anything, rather simply dedicated to this practice as a promise to someone. it's not something he discusses openly but it is the truth. that, and how he does actually care about the livelihoods of others.

he didn't want to be a hero. so when he had ended up in this position against his wishes, cypress did the bare minimum for a while. it was hard to balance school at the time with this new found responsiblity and he only really slipped into this pattern when he graduated. cypress found ways to work around with his hours and didn't have to spend hours upon hours memorizing and cramming. he still does it though. with many protests.
