He still suffers from a trauma from his past. Since then he wears his mask as often as he can to hide his scars, mostly from others but also from himself. Gunner has eisoptrophobia if he doesn't wear his mask. He still managed to cope with his mental illnesses and trauma and is happy and optimistic in front of his friends.
