02.DIVINATION

Inspired by the Spellcasting moodboard, this code was a lot of fun to make! I love skeuomorphic design, as well as linking characters with tarot symbolism, and so, as they say, one thing led to another.

The Magician

Lorelei Duskrin

18257782?1697211062

Since escaping the Underdark, Lorelei can't help but look on the bright side - of both life and death.

A former student of Sorcere, her past brushes with death have left Lorelei with a fascination for the darkest forms of magic, although her friendly and upbeat demeanor can seem a little dissonant in comparison. Like Persephone, Lorelei too is both flower maiden and queen of death, her feet planted firmly across the two worlds.

Carrying nothing but heart-felt promises and her own sense of curiosity, Lorelei is determined to see the surface world in all of its wonder, celebrating her hard-won freedom along the way.

“From my rotting body, flowers shall grow, and I am in them, and that is eternity.”
-Edvard Munch

Backstory

Lorelei Duskrin was born and raised in the Eastmyr district of Menzoberranzan, a large drow city deep within the depths of the Underdark. She was assigned male at birth, and bore the brunt of the misandric believes of a Lolthite society as a child and adolescent.
The Duskrin family was large and poor; Eastmyr was only a few small steps above the slums of the city, and housing was cramped, damp, and insecure. Food was hard to find and harder still to keep hold of, especially in such a large family. Like many commoner drow families, many generations, and many of their children, lived within close quarters, but for the most part very little love was shared amongst them.

Lorelei was close to one member of her family; her sister, Thalra. Two years Lorelei's senior, two had developed a close friendship, as well as a strong rivalry. Throughout their childhoods, the two had become near inseparable yet viciously competitive with one another, often to be found wrestling or quizzing each other on their studies in an attempt to one-up each other. As the pair navigated adolescence, Thalra gained a notable advantage over Lorelei in displays of physical might, while Lorelei's keen mind and attention to detail brought her an edge in battles of knowledge.

As the two siblings approached young adulthood, preparations were made to send Thalra to Arach-Tinilith, a prestidgeous clerical school. Lorelei, assigned male at birth and closeted, was considered unworthy and unable to follow her sister to the realms of the priestesses in the matriarchal society. Devastated at the loss of her one closest ally, Lorelei began a harder course of study in attempt to gain entrance to Sorcere, the wizarding school built on the outskirts of Arach-Tinilith. During this study, Lorelei found herself in her element, surrounded by arcane texts and a new form of power she had never expected. Her devotion to this new knowledge saw her through the school’s entrance exams and closer to her sister again, yet the two were still prohibited from interacting with one another.

Lorelei began dressing in female clothing in order to sneak into Arach-Tinilith and see her sister, using her androgynous looks and short frame to her favour. However, her visits could only be few and far between. During these visits, the two began to covertly discuss the possibility of leaving Menzoberranzan and the cruel word of the Underdark behind. These discussions fell somewhere between the realms of hopeless dreaming and a shared promise of a better future, but they kept the pair bolstered through the long months of study.

Around 10 months after her initial acceptance into Sorcere, Lorelei again made her way to visit her sister, having been unable to sneak into the clerical school for a few months. All seemed well as Lorelei and Thalra caught up with one another - until the door of Thalra's door slammed open, revealing Thalra's roommate, and the school's Matron Mother herself.

Immediately the pair new the jig was up. Scrambling, they ran for the window, dropping carefully to the ground far below (thank you Feather Fall). Knowing that capture could spell certain death for them both, they sprinted away from the school - but the authorities, and their magic, were never far behind.

In the chaos and fear of the chase, it took Lorelei a moment to realise Thalra was no longer keeping pace. Skidding to a halt, she turned to see her worst fears imagined: Thalra, pinned in the air by a magic far greater than either of their own. She struggled, but the webs of the Matron Mother's spell only seemed to grip tighter. As the Matron Mother descended, Thalra and Lorelei met eyes for the last time.
"Get to Drygully! Please!"
Lorelei did not wait to watch the inevitable.

The drow that emerged from Drygully Tunnel and onto the surface was exhausted, and bedraggled, and scared, but finally she saw a new world before her.
Lorelei wandered aimlessly through the High Forest for a few days, soaking in the wonders of a natural world she had barely dreamed of.

Her meeting with a wood elf scouting group was bewildering for both sides. Although initially distrustful of one another, the wood elves and Lorelei began to form a sense of comradery, and she was welcomed into their village for as long as she needed to regain bearings and acclimatise to the surface world. In her time in the wood elf village she formed a strong bond with Farley, an elf of similar age. She stayed with the wood elves for a little over a year, before drow raids on local settlements left her too scared to stay in the area.

At Farley's suggestion, she decided to take up travelling the new world she was now a part of. Torn between following Lorelei and remaining with the rest of their community, Farley found the decision made for them when they were drafted in to protect the village from the drow attacks. As so, left with the promise of a reunion, Lorelei set out into the bright world ahead of her.
