Chalcedony was raised with the expectation that they would become a knight in service to their people, according to the long-held tradition of gnomes of their lineage. They didn’t expect to be chosen to wed an overworlder as part of the ancient pact between their peoples- though it is an honor they had fantasized of receiving when they were small.
Cal is ignorant of the culture of the aboveworlders, and is very shy and hesitant with her new spouse, finding her new duty more intimidating than facing off against the creatures she’s used to defending her home against.
