Sparkling

Shae was orphaned as a baby. His mother died shortly after he was born and his father refused to have anything to do with him. Such was the life most Chroma ended up living. Not that it bothered him in the slightest. Raised and cared for by Kass, he grew up in the brothel alongside the only other kid there, Zye. It was his first friend and his only best friend. The one person he’d do anything for and anything to help make things right for them.

When he finishes school, he’s quick to sign up to work at Ruby’s Light despite Kass’s demands and pleads that he doesn’t. Except he has more of a chance to do so versus Zye and he knows that drives something between them at first. Because Kass allows him to, as his godparent she gives him her blessing and would rather he work there with her where it’s safe.

It’s not shortly later that it all comes to a head when he takes Kass and Lyra’s side, trying to tell Zye what they think is best. For the first time, he realizes he could lose his best friend. At first, he didn’t reach out. He went about his life and refused to think of the bad that came from such an outcome. Until he couldn’t stand it a second longer and some time later, reached out to Zye.

Something he’s glad he did. Not only did he get his best friend back, but he also got Callua and then Jace shortly after. They make his life bright and fulfilled where he didn’t think it was possible. He’s never felt that high on the totem pole in his life before. Which is why it shattered him when it came crashing down.

Fizzling

Zye’s death did something to him that he doesn’t ever admit to. To be the one that’s left isn’t easy. Even if he knows he’s going to follow, the survivor’s guilt is hardly easy for him to deal with. Shae would then throw himself into work and while he spends plenty of time with Callua or Jace, it’s not the same. It’s never the same again.

It’s not much later that he ends up staying at Kass’s. There are only so many treatments and his body buckles under his lifestyle coupled with the disease. Kass and her team take care of him with Jace and Callua frequently visiting to cheer him up.
