Name Penelope Dreadful
Nickname "Ms. Penny Dreadful"
Age 23
Pronouns She/Her
Species Human
Occupation Scribe, librarian
Location Everton
World Abirelle
Status Living
Theme Library Card

Scribes such as Penelope are a rare sight in Abirelle; few are gifted with the ability to enchant spells, though an ability as useful as this is highly saught after. As such, Penelope's work is simply never done. Despite this, Penelope is very passionate about her work, and is glad to assist her fellow magicians in their spell usage.

When not scribing spells for others, Penelope can be found sorting through books in her library, or guiding visitors to the books they seek. Penelope's patience makes an excellent librarian; her only pet peeve would be noise.

Appearance

Eye Color Brown
Skintone #fde4e0
Hair Color Eggshell white
Hair Style Shoulder length

Voice HC: "There is still much to learn."

Despite initial impressions, Penelope is not, in fact, a rabbit. The soft bunny ears atop her hear are simply attached to a hairband, while her fluffy tail is apart of her skirt. Penelope's hair is a slight off-white color, her eyes golden brown.

Penelope's clothing is reminiscent of the lolita style, evident by the many frills hemming her skirt. Penelope wears a lacy pink headband, soft rabbit ears sewn in. Penelope's socks resembles rabbits, as well.

Penelope wears large, round framed glasses.

Design Notes

  • Penelope's rabbit ears are attached to her headband.
  • Penelope's glasses are exaggerated in size. They're very large, in other words.

About

Penelope is viewed by Everton's residents as a quiet and soft spoken librarian. By this logic, some may assume Penelope is also quite shy, though they may be surprised to learn that the opposite is true. Penelope is reserved, but she is certainly not a door mat; the comfort and satisfaction of library patrons is extremely important to Penelope, and she will not hesitate to scold rowdy visitors who have little regard for others' studying. While typically patient and understanding, Penelope becomes quickly annoyed in loud, disruptive environments.

Penelope is very passionate about her work. Those who know Penelope find her dedication and intelligence admirable, and many young magicians hope to achieve her level of respect some day for their own skills. Penelope's love of magic makes her an excellent librarian, and she is glad to teach others what she knows, or direct them to the best study material for their questions.

While Penelope is not necessarily shy, she is somewhat introverted. Penelope prefers solitude, especially after handling customers for long periods of time. She may excuse herself throughout the work day to restock bookshelves by herself, or sort through returned books in one of the libary's back rooms away from visitors. Though she keeps to herself mostly, Penelope is not lonely. The nature of her work allows her to meet new and exciting magic users each and every day.

Trivia

  • Not every magician uses a grimoire or spell scroll to cast their magic. Some magic users require a sort of totem as their source of power; for example, Skye's source of magic comes from her markings, while Merle uses a grimoire and talismans.
  • Everton's library often hosts official polls. This is because of Penelope's interest in Everton's demographics.
  • Penelope finds magic of all sorts intriguing and certainly does not discriminate against Merle's Imp heritage. Merle visits the scribe to enchant her Imp talismans.
  • Penelope owns a pet cat named Nova.
  • The traditions of other cultures is something that interests Penelope a lot.
  • The name Penelope is a Greek name meaning "duckling". Penelope's surname, Dreadful, is a reference to Penny Dreadful novels.

Magic and Abilities

Scribing

Scribing is a rare ability in the world of Abirelle, allowing magicians the skill to infuse scrolls and spell books with magical energy, ultimately enchanting the Witch Rune written within them. An enchanted spell book, also known as a grimoire, contains castable spells written in the ancient language of Witch Rune; if a grimoire, talisman, or spell scroll has not been enchanted by a scribe, they are essentially useless until infused.

Scribing is an uncommon asset few magic users are equipped with. Since not every magician is capable of enchanting their own spells, scribes are often found working in libraries around Abirelle providing this service to aspiring magicians for a small fee.

It is important to note that scribes are usually not capable of casting spells enchanted themselves; the extent of the average scribe's magic is literary based. For instance, a scribe cannot cast spells meant for a necromancer. Spells may only be cast by those capable of that specific class of magic.

Blind Reading

Penelope is capable of blind reading, or the ability to read Witch Rune through her fingertips. This essential skill allows magicians to read their spells without looking down onto the page. This is vastly useful for protection and training, in a young magic user's case. The extent of blind reading generally stops at Witch Rune; most magicians cannot read other languages through this method.
