Nana Manami is what is called a "Midnight Angel", an elusive humanoid species that is collectively involved in a cult-like group, involved in luring humans into the ocean to become one of their kind. "Sunlight Angels" are more common, yet Nana is one of their rarer subtypes as mentioned previously.
It's unknown how she has managed to reach this level of ascendsion (or descendsion, as they call it), as it's clear Nana has less of a connection to whatever deity that lurks at the very bottom of the ocean's abyss, therefore being somewhat despised or ridiculed by others of her kind. She also is seen out of the ocean frequently, a habit taboo to most Midnight Angels.
Despite this, Nana still brings a terrible curse that threatens humanity, with her strange ability to turn people (and sometimes, Sunlight Angels) into jellyfish. She doesn't care if you don't agree to this "favor" she's doing for you, she already assumed it's the best for you. She thinks it provides a method of permanent escapism to those suffering on land, suffering in isolation. And she then brings them to her little special spot deep in the ocean, where they all gather as a family.
The most horrifying part of this is that the jellyfish-people still maintain their human consciousness, but what can mere jellyfish do about it?

The ocean is a wonderful place, yet she doesn't believe in any higher power that lurks beneath the water's surface. All under the ocean are equal, and the concept of a hierarchy feels too "human" to her, and she loathes it. That's what made her slowly stray away from the general beliefs of her cult.
