"In the end they will kill us. But first, they shall fear us."

Theme: Elddansurin - Heilung

Blood dripped from his whiskers.

The boar's breath steamed in the cold air with each ragged breath he took. The snow lay in a violent churn, kicked up from the chaos of battle and stained dark red. Ragnar breathed, his chest heaving, as wisps of magic evaporated off of his skin.

The Frenzy was difficult to control, but the berserker felt that he was slowly finding a better grasp on it with each casting. Clarity returned to his mind as his blood grew less hot, the winter chill brushing across his flesh and bringing him focus. He squeezed his eyes shut a moment, finding his senses.

He couldn't remember the entire battle. Reports from the scouts indicated the approach of one of the Corrupted, and Ragnar remembered setting out with a group of archers. They'd found the thing a mile from his village, hulking and reeking of vile rot. It felled one of his men before he could even draw his bow, and all Hell had broken loose. Though it wasn't towering like many Corrupted, he'd still needed to enter berserkergang to finish the fight.

Ragnar looked. Among the bodies of his people was the remains of the Corrupted. Savaged and leaking magical energy, but very much dead. He closed his eyes as he caught his breath. His village called him blessed; to be the only one among his people bearing arcane talents elevated him to a position of high power in Hildesvini. Ragnar, however, found it to be a curse at times. To carry the weight of his village, his people, their land, all on his arms... it was a daunting responsibility to bear alone.

Personality

On a surface level, Ragnar is a cold and ill-mannered pig with little reverence for those outside of his clan. He carries with him a very serious demeanor that he puts toward bettering his village and protecting his people. He’s a bit sloppy and off-putting, often slurping from his wineskin and tends to talk with his mouth full no matter what company he keeps.

Those who aren’t immediately turned off by him, however, will find a tired man who bears weight that he did not ask for. Ragnar loves his home and his villagers, but the pressure of being their one protector from a young age has worn on his soul. Though dedicated and loyal, he bears a resentment toward his station and his magic that he ignores rather than copes with. He became the man he needed to be rather than the one he wanted to be, and he sometimes wonder what his life would have been like had he not developed arcane talent or set out for the Order. He finds some level of solace in facing challenges greater than the last.

With those he’s friendly toward, Ragnar is loud, crass, and humorous. He isn’t a hateful sod like some expect him to be; he loves company and is thrilled to find others whose skills match his own. Some find that he’s full of nuggets of advice— good advice, even.

History

Ragnar grew up in the village of Hildesvini, a remote hamlet found in one of the snowy mountain regions of the world. His affinity for the arcane was discovered when he was young, and as a result, the young boar was regarded with burgeoning hope.

Hildesvini was barren of mages. It was a simple farming village, far from major settlements and thus, far from the aid of the Corruption-killers. Hildesvini had its warriors, yes, but they were far from trained to handle the remnants of the forsaken mages that fell upon their settlement. Ragnar presented the people of the village with hope. In their hands a weapon had been birthed; all they had to do now was sharpen it.

Ragnar, as he grew, was given the freedom to develop his magic. He lacked any sort of tutor, so it was left to him and his village’s general to figure out how to wield his magic against the Corrupted. Gorm was a cold suid, but he saw to Ragnar’s growth dutifully. At first, Ragnar was excited to have his people’s respect and reverence and this newfound freedom was intoxicating. As he saw his first battle, and the battle after that and so on, he began to resent his power.

Ragnar loved his home, his people, his way of life. However, he was unprepared for them to look to him for guidance and protection when he was only but a young man. He was burdened with responsibility that he did not ask for and he found himself bound by the heavy chains that power brought. He resented it, but he coped.

To this day, Ragnar remains the sole mage in Hildesvini. He has become, in a sense, the Jarl of the village. Respected and revered, feared but loved, he sits upon his throne and cuts down all Corrupted that wander upon his lands.

Ragnar’s magic is heavily combat-based. Casting triggers a berserker state in which his strength, reflexes and endurance are heightened, which makes him a force to be reckoned with. However, his lack of discipline leaves his mind clouded and unfocused. Some have referred to it as a blood frenzy in which he attacks anything that he can with little regard to who gets caught in the crossfire. When he leaves berserkergang he has trouble recalling all that happened while he was in his casting. While his boosted abilities make him formidable, his lack of focus will cause him to ignore wounds that could very well kill him once he leaves the berserker state. Lack of attention to the blows he takes in battle could very well be what he succumbs to.

Costs

  • Magic somewhat impairs or reduces one or more of the caster's senses while it is in use.
