Jonah ran away from home at the age of 12. His father was abusive, stemming from his mother's accidental death. He blamed Jonah for the death of his mother, due to the fact that he was present at the scene of the crime. Jonah doesn't remember his mother, as he was 5 at the time of her death. He made a home in the forest, and was never heard from again. He's become a sort of urban legend in his hometown; the missing boy who carries a lantern around the forest at night. Supposedly, if you see the lantern, horrible things are to come.
