It isn't Destry's fault his adoptive parents didn't love him. They wanted an easy child. They wanted a doll, not a human.
The lack of love in Destry's youth sent him into the arms of dangerous people who saw him as an easy target of manipulation. Heartbroken over his breakup with his college lover, he fell hard for the charming older man who doted on him endlessly. Slowly, the man got Destry more and more attached to him - more reliant on him. Destry had not realized the man was a vampire, targeting him so he could slowly drain Destry of life before bringing him before his cult, a prime sacrifice. Luckily, Destry managed to get away. He now has a deep fear of vampires.
