BACKSTORY:

When Zach was young, his father got on the wrong side of a powerful witch. In her anger, she cursed the family with bad luck. This curse affects them in many different ways, from making them more likely to get ill, to making other people mistrust them, to making accidents happen around them. The family were soon left poor and hopeless. Zach grew up doing what he could to support them, which often involved stealing.

At 19, he sneaked onto a pirate ship in hopes of stealing their valuables and leaving before he was discovered; however, the ship unexpectedly left with him still on board. When the captain found him, he showed mercy and offered him a job. Zach gradually earned the respect of the crew by proving himself as a swordsman and thief. When the captain died, he was able to assume control of the ship.

Zach sends most of his spoils home to his family, and hopes to someday find a way to remove the curse on them.

Zach likes to portray himself as tough, cool and confident. He has an authoritative presence and usually has no problem getting his crew to do what he wants. He'll fight bravely against adversaries, but also knows when it's better to cut his losses, escape or surrender. He rarely panics in dangerous situations.

Zach has an unfortunately short-fused temper and finds it very difficult to stay calm when mocked. He has too much pride for his own good, and hates showing weakness (even if the "weakness" is only in his mind). He uses avoidant methods to cope with stress, ignoring or downplaying issues rather than confronting them. Personal conversations are not his strong point; he prefers to keep things strictly business and rarely opens up to anyone. He also harbours an unhealthy amount of paranoia, largely caused by one of his own crewmates attempting to kill him.

Zach isn't without a lighter side. He has a dry sense of humour that only comes out around people he trusts - and gaining his trust is no easy feat. He maintains an air of arrogance to hide his own insecurities, but doesn't truly consider himself better than other people.

DESIGN:

Zach has a short, lean build. He has cold blue eyes and long brown hair tied back in a ponytail. His captain's outfit includes a long green coat and yellow scarf (his favourite colours).

He lost his right hand several years ago when one of his own crew members attempted to kill him. He now wears a metal hook prosthetic that he can remove whenever he wants. He uses it for various tasks.

ABILITIES:

Zach is a rather skilled swordsman. He's very strong and very quick, using his small frame to his advantage to outmaneuver enemies. He also has some experience with pistols, although isn't the best shot. His preferred weapon is a cutlass.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Jerald

The second-in-command of the Silver Eagle. Zach initially finds Jerald annoying, but they eventually develop a friendship, mostly as a result of Jerald's persistence. His simple friendliness and boyish sense of humour bring out the more lighthearted side of Zach.

Joanna

One of Zach's most trusted crewmates. She is intelligent, dependable and a brilliant fighter. They clashed a little when Zach first became captain, as Joanna wasn't sure if he could do the job, but they respect each other now.

Family

Zach has three siblings: older brother Oscar and twin younger brothers Larry and James. His mother is alive, but his father died many years ago. Zach is generally on good terms with everyone. However, since running away to be a pirate, he's become more reserved, rarely visiting his family. He hasn't told them the truth about his "job", although they've guessed it might be something unsavoury.

TRIVIA:

- Used to have a pet baby shark, but had to release it when it grew too big for his cabin.

- Very insecure about his height, and has a habit of unconsciously standing on top of things to compensate for it. Mocking his height is one of the quickest ways to provoke him.

- Despite his small size, he's very strong and has been known to overpower people much bigger than him.

- Still suffers occasional pain in the stump of his right hand, usually triggered by cold or from wearing his prosthetic too long.

- Slightly unnerved by deep water, though not enough to stop him from swimming if necessary.
