There are two types of Androids: Mass Produced units like North, who all look the same with subpar parts, and Designer droids like Delete who are unique, expensive, and created with extremely high quality materials.
Teacher is the now-illegal third category of androids: military grade sentinel. After Sentinels were classified as weapons of Mass Desruction and banned from the battlefield during a peace conference in the distant future. All sentinels were meant to be destroyed, but Teacher and Phoenix were smuggled out by a military general for personal use. He never saw war, and was reprogrammed as a nanny/pre-school teacher for the generals children. He teaches them how to count, spell, recite the alphabet to things like advanced calculus and chemical engineering- Teacher is near expert in it all! After an unexplained incident, however, Teacher gained free will and was able to defy the Artifical Intelligence Fail Safe protocols and blatantly disobeyed humans.
The interesting thing is, however, that any AI Teacher comes in contact with gains free will- like the spread of a virus. Cyber Scientists kept him locked up in a bunker devoid of all tech to stop the spread of the disease while they studied why his code formed this malware. Years pass. Then North breaks him out. (For selfish reasons, of course. North is Mass Produced and the girl who they report to found them in the scrap bin of the factory they were made in. They believe that their code was never finished, and the emptiness they feel inside is that missing piece.) North breaks him out to use him for his code. Teacher goes with North to use him as an escape route. Eventually, they fall in love. A while after that happens, they finally start to act like it.
