Paloma's from an island in the North Blue called Tile Island: an island with jagged, geometric mountains and the ground naturally colored and shaped like a chessboard. She was given away as a baby to a group known as Black Velvet, a cult in every sense of the word who took in unwanted/unneeded children to use for their own goals. She spent the entirety of her childhood growing up in the cult, suffering through rigorous and inhuman "training" at the hands of the adult leaders. She was exposed to many types of toxins and carcinogens through meals laced with various chemicals, as well as being forced to learn how to fight and fend for herself alongside the other kids. However, because of all of this, most of the children ended up dying either from malnutrition, lack of correct medical attention, or side effects from the deadly toxins. Paloma was one of the few to make it to her teenage years, though it felt like a fate worse than death.

Shortly after her 19th birthday, Paloma was taken for one last "sparring" match with one of the other children; one of the only others to survive alongside her, as well as her closest friend. However, the leaders were quick and pleased to drop the news that this wouldn't be a normal match. They would be fighting for real, and for their lives. Their intent was for whoever made it out of the match to become the cult's "Messiah", and their one chance to gain any sort of political power to put their island on the radar. Paloma was devastated and refused to fight her friend, but when her friend came at her with weapons, Paloma had no choice but to defend herself. Her friend ended up losing to her and rather than die at Paloma's hands, took her own life. "You were too nice to really hurt anyone, ya know? Live your life to the fullest, for all of us, okay?" The leaders had to carry Paloma away from the area, too weak and broken to carry herself away. They ended up forcing her to eat a Devil Fruit they'd obtained many, many years prior for this situation, giving her power over Tar. For months after she refused to speak and spent all of her time working with her new powers, waiting for her chance to escape Tile Island. She became very emotionally stunted, finding it hard to react much to anything at all.

Yani-Yani no Mi (脂脂の美) || "Tar-Tar Fruit"
A logia fruit that turns the user's body into Tar. Paloma tends to refrain from turning much of her body into Tar, preferring to stick to just her hands or creating tar pits that she can manipulate. Because of this, her hands always turn black when she uses her powers and only revert back to normal after she's through. For the most part, she refuses to use her powers to kill anyone at first; intent on using her powers to stop her enemies in their place and successfully trapping them. She can also harden and manipulate the viscosity of the tar as well, making them as hard as stone or as viscous as water. The one and only instance of Paloma using her powers to her full potential, Paloma was not of her right mind and could not control herself. It is due to this that Paloma tends to refrain from using her full abilities.

Night Stop
For combat, Paloma can make balls/bullets out of Tar that she can send firing at foes; the most common usage is what she calls "Night Stop"; a useful technique that uses the glue-like nature of it in order to trap foes as they step in it. This partnered with her acute perception and skill with Observational Haki makes it very accurate and hard to avoid stepping in. Water, however, can dilute the tar to a degree, making it slightly easier to escape from.

Tattoo [ after eating the Tar-Tar Fruit ]
Her tattoo is of a dripping crescent moon around a compass-rose styled star. It's meant to tie into her love for the stars as well as her want to escape to the sea, a place she'd heard so much about during her time growing up in Black Velvet. She gets it shortly after Black Velvet forces her to eat the Tar-Tar Fruit, using it as a memento towards all the children she grew up with and her best friend's dying words, telling her to keep living.
