Fern loves and cares for Luci immensely, the mare being one of the few things that kept her going for all those years. He treats her like his own child, having taken a bullet for her on multiple occasions. If he had to choose between her dying and going through unbelievable pain, he'd choose the pain.

Another one of Fern's pets that he loves with everything he has. He's had him ever since he was a kid, so their bond is incredibly tight, both of them protecting each other fiercely, despite their smaller sizes. He treats him like his kida just as he does with Luci, the two of them almost always being seen together, Bear always sleeping in his bed with him.

Fern is madly in love with him, though at times, he find it hard to express how much he loves him, resulting in his freaking out and saying some wild shit. Mitch doesn't seem to mind though, the two of them having been friends before they got together, so some banter wasn't new at all. Besides, he knows Fern, the real him. He knows he's just not used to his feelings being reciprocated. Fern's just proud to be one of the few people he's nice to, and even more proud to be the one that got to be with him.

Willy's like a little brother to Fern, having taken a liking to him very quickly, even though he, initially, was a little shit. Seeing as Willy has taken an interest in his gun skills and western attitude, it's no wonder that Fern likes him so much. He often teaches him some of his own tricks, having even scavenged a cowboy hate for him.

With their similar personalities, it's no wonder they get along so well. Fern always manages laughs at his jokes, finding them charming. He loves how sweet and genuine he is, even to people he hardly knows. He's one of the people who makes his life worth living, enjoying his optimistic and kind-hearted nature.

Fern was very close with Brody, having loved how sweet she was. They would often spend hours just talking about the future, what they wanted to do with their lives. Fern never said it, but he used to habour feelings for her, but was too scared to say anything. He was content on just staying by her side and helping her with her anxiety.

Yazzy and Fern are very close, the two of them having traveled together for a better part of the apocalypse. Despite Yazzy being older than him, they seemed to get along pretty well, becoming friends fairly quickly. They’re prone to playful banter just like siblings would, usually consisting of Yazzy either making fun of him or telling him to shut up when he says something a bit too crazy or Fern teasing her over her ‘resting bitch face’. Despite this, the two of them are practically family, Yazzy knowing everything there is to know about Fern and vice versa. While Fern is usually embarrassed and insecure about his feelings, he always feels safe talking to Yazzy about anything. He sees her as his sister in a way, being one of the people he’d take a bullet for, no questions asked.

Dee and Fern are pretty close, having hit it off almost immediately after she arrived at the school. Dee is the only person he trusts his hair with, letting her braid it and mess with it. He even goes to her to get help with his horse, Luci and her mane making for some great bonding between them. Dee was also the person who ended up getting him and Mitch together, so he’s eternally grateful for her. He’ll constantly do things for Dee because of it, even when she tells him it’s fine. Doesn’t stop him though, giving gifts is just how he shows he cares.

Fern doesn’t talk to Marin that often, but that never stopped him from becoming friends with her. They were mostly brought together by Louis, the dude never failing to try to get everyone to be friendly. Marin wasn’t the most talkative, mostly keeping to herself when they first met, but he never took it to heart, having also been an introvert in his past. And it seemed that patience paid off well, Fern getting to see what was beneath that hardened shell. They got pretty close from that point forward, Fern finding enjoyment in teasing her for just about anything, laughing at how ‘angry’ Marin would get. He was devastated when the bear attack happened, going as far as to not call out his dog’s name in concern for her. And with how much he cares for his friends, he did not miss out on any visits, bringing her cool skulls and bones he found while hunting as well as making a rabbit’s foot for her, telling her it was for good luck.

When they first met, they weren’t too keen on one another, Avery having met him during an intense grieving period for the cowboy. Fern was prone to snapping, not seeming too happy to have a new person in the group, going as far as to get mad at her specifically after finding out she was the one stealing their supplies. Though in reality, Fern didn’t care, not really, anyway. But Avery certainly didn’t see it that way, despite what Marin tried to tell her. Though as time goes on and Fern actually processes his grief, feeling incredibly guilty for the way that he treated her. He feels awkward talking to her about it, so he instead does tiny things to try to make her notice, like leaving gifts for her and doing small things to try to make up for it. Though even he knew he would have to actually apologize eventually. And he did end up doing just that, Avery forgiving him for the most part, but she never lets him forget what he did, making fun of him for his anger and all the gifts. They often get into unserious fights where they tell each other to end their lives. From an outside perspective, they seem like they hate each other but they’re actually friends, even if it doesn’t look like it.
