Connections:

King Candy: On the surface, she acts like she hates the tyrannical monarch. If he ever does stop by Mercy's property, she actively tries to push back his influence by insisting his jurisdiction has no business being on her property- and she won't hesitate to pull her Saltgun on him either. However, she hates to admit she does find him charming, and secretly had a crush on him.

Vanellope:

  • Circa King Candy: She sees this child as a great troublemaker. Mercy does not dislike Vanellope, but she often found the nosy glitch on her property and was quick to chase her off her plot.
  • Post-Reset: Now knowing Vanellope was always the intended ruler, she shows a different disposition to the character. She does not respect her, as Mercy finds all authority questionable. However, she at least likes that Vanellope established a Democracy in the kingdom.

Backstory:

Mercy is an NPC that was programmed to serve as the exterminator to Sugar Rush. Sugar Rush was originally intended to have insects that would spawn into the world that would dine on the homes and karts of the Sugar Rush characters. As the only character with this purpose, she struggled to keep up with the demand required to exterminate all insects by herself. So, the game's code did what it thought was the most efficient solution: it gave Mercy a duplication glitch to assist her in her objective. This glitch causes Mercy to unintentionally clone herself under high emotions (particularly linked to bugs). The side effect of multiplying herself is that each copy of her divides her total focus and become more one-tracked each time. For example, if Mercy sees a whole bunch of ant colonies, she will go into a frenzy over whether to drown them, lure them out, etc. Then for each extermination method, she will divide herself and each Mercy focuses on their task.

When the developers saw her cloning glitch was becoming a problem in the beta phase, they knew they had to stifle the problem. They didn't see reason to go through the effort of deleting her because she is only an NPC. Instead, they removed the mechanic that caused for the insects in Sugar Rush to spawn in to avoid triggering Mercy's glitch.  In the years leading up to the Wreck-It Ralph movie, she remained as an NPC, but she felt ever so empty without being able to fulfill her purpose. In fact, she didn't know what it was. She still has her land and her Saltguns, but she didn't have her pet Veanus (Vanilla+Beanus) Flytraps or her thrive to hunt insects. She still had all her tools, but she didn't know what they were for yet.

It wasn't until after the Cybug invasion that she felt her code kicking in. The moment she laid eyes on those metallic parasites, she haphazardly glitched, splitting into multiple copies of herself. Before she knew it, each copy she made scattered and ran across the candy land. The Mercys were able to take down a couple of the cybugs that had confronted them, feeling victorious in their efforts. Once all the clones rejoined back into Mercy, she gained the sense to snap off the lollipop branch Sour Bill was stuck on (she was in the area) and ran back towards the exit just in time to see the beacon had been activated. Since then, Mercy had been itching for her old exterminator calling back. It took a few months, but once the gang revisited the Code Room to access the other deleted files, they were able to restore the insects in Sugar Rush and Mercy's pet Veanus Flytraps. So here we are now!

Trivia:

- As my Sugarsona, she is basically me.

- She doesn't even need a newspaper or shoe to smash bugs; she is fine with using her hands.

- She has a habit of sticking her tongue out. She does not do this offensively; this is just something she does at random.

- She is pretty distrusting of new people and environments but get her comfortable enough and she will talk your ear off!

- She is a chaotic neutral who prefers to do her own thing. She does not take kindly to being ordered around, but she will oblige if she does not see a legitimate reason to argue.

- When she splits characters, she starts losing more and more of her logic. Eventually, she will not be able to fuse back with her other counterparts to form a single Mercy, so outside prevention may be needed.
