Lin is the kind of person you want to be friends with. He's a good listener, for one thing, and always seems to remember that thing you were planning on doing last week, and asks you how it went. He doesn't mind paying for your meal if you're short on cash. He gets gifts that are somehow exactly what you needed, even if it wasn't something you realized you wanted. He also has difficulty putting his guard up. A few times, people have taken advantage of his kindness, because he has a hard time drawing boundaries in relationships. However, he does have firm moral boundaries. While he won't cut off a friend if they violate his personal boundaries, if they act cruelly or unfairly to other people, he's not afraid to stop them.
Lin in his personal life is a very social person, but he also likes his alone time. He spends a lot of time thinking through his work, whether it involves lesson plans, biology research, or just his life in general. He puts thought into his appearance, into how he talks to people, into the food he cooks. He likes doing things properly, or else he might as well not do it at all. Lin expresses his emotions openly, whether that's crying at a movie or telling someone he knows how much he appreciates their company. Lin cares deeply about many things, both personal and political, and takes action as much as he can. His passion about things is part of why he can get very emotional, but he doesn't mind that. Lin enjoys having a wide range of emotions, including both deep sadness and powerful happiness.
Appearance
Lin is a Latino man about 6' tall. He has a stocky build, with broad shoulders and strong arms. His skin is light brown, and his hair is black. Usually, his hair is shaved short on the sides, and the top is longer and dyed white. He has a square jaw and high cheekbones, as well as a straight nose and soft lips, making many consider him handsome. His eyes are squared off but soft, and his irises are a deep, warm chocolate brown. He needs glasses, and prefers horn-rimmed glasses, particularly those in pleasant shades of brown.
Lin enjoys dressing in bright colors. His favorite colors to wear are pinks and oranges. He often wears button-down shirts with small patterns on them, especially if they're silly patterns. He prefers not to wear ties, because he find them uncomfortable. He has an assortment of colorful slacks. On days where he isn't at work, he dresses in more t-shirts and jeans, often with a flannel shirt thrown over the outfit. At work he wears fashionable leather shoes, but over the weekends he prefers a pair of old hiking boots. Lin walks in a confident but approachable manner, but sometimes can shrink before people who are particularly angry or upset.

Backstory
Lin's mother died when he was barely a year old, so he never really knew her, only how her death affected his father. He struggled with depression and alcoholism, and although he was never cruel to Lin, he had difficulty taking care of him properly. This meant that he often went to his abuela's. She took care of him when his father was struggling, and once he got back on his feet and started going to Alcoholic's Anonymous, he started taking care of Lin. As a result, Lin was very close to his father as well as his father's mother. Lin was a nerdy kid in high school, but kids weren't particularly mean to him, because he was friendly and kept his head down. He played Dungeons and Dragons with his friends, and did very well in his science and math classes.
However, once he got to college, he had more difficulty. Alcoholism was genetic in his family, and after having more access to alcohol he started having issues with it, drinking too much too often. A friend of his, August, got him into some harder drugs. His grades started to fall. Then, him and August realized they needed to cut back, and vowed to get clean together. They both made it through college, got sober, and started on graduate degrees. He had a few long-term relationships, including one that resulted in him having a child, accidentally. The woman wasn't willing to raise the child, and dropped out as soon as she could. However, Lin really wanted to take care of the kid, named Ava, and so despite the surprise he did so. He really cares for her.
Relations
Henry West Henry is Lin's husband. Henry is the one who stands up for Lin when Lin has a hard time standing up for himself, and teaches him to say no when he needs to say no. Lin is one of the few people allowed to give Henry big bear hugs.
Nox Chance Nox is a grad student who does research and takes classes in Lin's department. He and Lin are currently working together on a research project. Lin really likes Nox, he's a very nice young man, and Nox admires Lin and his work.
August Frost Lin and August met in college and got into a lot of shit together. They also got out of a lot of shit together, which was a bonding experience. August is always the first one to tell Lin when he needs to drop someone.
