In Red Oak, the children tell stories about a strange mansion that can be found at the heart of the woods, with no path or road leading to it. This mansion exists, and it belongs to the reclusive fae royal, Duke Swan, who, prior to his migration to the new world, had been best known by the name Rothbart- the villain of the (true) fairytale Swan Lake.

One a renowned warrior, statesman and socialite, feared by humans as a wicked fae or evil sorcerer, Swan has lived as a reclusive hermit in his mansion throughout the past century, after losing his brother Ebon to the first World War. In love with mortals and their technology, but afraid of the same, until recently he has not set foot outside of his mansion in many years, instead sending his small pool of servants out on errands.

A fae through and through, Swan is passionate, capricious, intense, jealous, a bit perverted, and sometimes rather childish. He has spent the last century quietly indulging himself in his hobbies, including throwing lavish fae-only parties, tieing up beautiful women and men (mostly servants and party guests during this time), and collecting and mastering examples of human technology.

Throughout the first half of the century, as for long before it,Swan was primarily a collector of expensive watches. However, once the advent of the personal computer came, Swan found he had a new passion. Too capricious and inattentive to learn programming, the devilish fae instead became obsessed with human video games, amassing an absurdly lavish collection over the years in his ‘game room’. Lately, he’s even started to come out of his shell to lose his temper at children in xbox live, turning the air blue with the things he’ll do to your mother, and occasionally laying out a real curse.

Even more recently, Swan has started to allow guests at his mansion, starting with the young Prince of the Autumn Wood who had been raised by humans. It was a slippery slope from there, and now he finds himself engaged to a harpy who had been the original Helen of Troy, and who insists on him coming out of his shell. It's only a matter of time before Swan makes his public debut again. .
