She's a very caring mother, but she can generally be very harsh to those who don't meet her standards. She doesn't care what others think of her (to an extent) because she likes to stand her ground as a strong person, but she also knows her place and respects manners and thinks that people shouldn't be so frivolous.

History

Catherine was born to a respected middle-class family in 1838. Her family brought her up well: she's well-read but not professionally educated, and she was taught good manners. 

With her at the time boyfriend, Harvey, she got pregnant out of wedlock. This move almost got her disowned because the family feared being disgraced, but they loved their beautiful only daughter too much. As an attempt to cover up, she was quickly hurried into an arranged marriage with another man to cover up. She was under a tight watch for a while. In the end though, she had it annulled. 

Despite all the efforts of her family's cover up for her mistake, she still wanted her son to have Harvey's surname too after Harvey suggested it so it wouldn't put more disgrace on her family.
