Petro is very difficult to pin down, for he isn't very outwardly expressive in the traditional sense. The words he uses are not to obscure his intentions, they make perfect sense to him, but they're difficult to decipher for everyone around him. Petro tries to make himself come off as inviting, but his odd demeanor and lowkey sinister articulation often gets in the way of achieving this and he can come across as cold and unfeeling. It doesn't help that at his old age, he's grown jaded to others' criticisms of him, and the dark magic that has consumed his life has made the air around him physically cold. Petro has found comfort in the darkness; his philosphy dictates that while people need to seek out the light, the darkness will always be there for him. Everyone seems to agree there is something dark and odd but still fascinating within him, in a sort of morbid curiosity way. Despite his oddities, Petro has become a very well-respected individual amongst his peers. Petro sincerely cares for the people who accept him as he is, darkness and all.
Petro used to work in an organisation that studies supernatural beings and occurences. He never wanted to go out into the field, preferring to stay in the labs where early research on darkness was conducted. Petro was the leader of this effort, but he was not a fan of the isolated approach to the studies, and he wanted to experience the effects of darkness and corruption first-hand, believing it'd lead to better results. Despite the warnings from his peers of the dangers of such an action, Petro ended up taking in the darkness, and he let it consume him entirely. His co-workers and superiors did not appreciate his "betrayal", casting out the obsessed now ex-scientist. In return, Petro took all of his findings on darkness with him, leaving them with next to nothing.
As he was still learning the extents of his newfound powers, Petro encountered a strange dove with darkened feathers. Petro took in this little outcast of a bird, naming her Fate. As darkness consumed Fate, she developed a unique power. Petro took note of this ability, and over time this power was controlled and harnessed for the benefit of the both of them.
Not too long after, Petro met with Griffus, the soon-to-be founder and leader of the Saltwater Gang. As time went on, the two became very close co-workers. Petro is not considered an official member of the Saltwater Gang, rather a trusted associate who mainly does his own thing, that thing being the continued study of darkness and corruption. The Gang and Petro will often run errands for each-other at times.
Fate has recently brought a troubled girl to Petro, one who has just lost her older brother. Petro tried to use his dark magic to bring him back to life, with the initial attempt seeming futile. The next day, however, it turns out Petro's dark spell actually worked! Unfortunately, the now undead Wicksworth has wandered off, much to Feather and Petro's dismay. He'll have to call in the Gang to help find him.
Powers and Abilities
Petro has many, many abilities, mainly tied to shadows and darkness itself.
- By "connecting" with someone's shadow, he can tell if they are lying or not. This is most effective when the target is asked a yes/no questions, but he cannot deduce a full answer out of someone this way if it's an open-ended question. He can also dissolve his physical form and hide in someone's shadow entirely.
- A more involuntary ability of his is to completely blind a person if they make eye contact with him. By 'blind', it means to cast their vision into complete darkness. Luckily this effect isn't permanent and will fade away after a while. Besides, Petro hates holding eye contact with people anyway, so he never uses this power on accident. He can also blind people by placing his hand on their head or face, but he has to be focusing on using this power to do so, and he will never do this accidentally. When blinding someone, Petro himself will be the only thing visible to them, albeit just in the form of a sketchy red silhouette.
- Petro can make "imprints" of objects made of solid shadow. It's essentially just copying the shape of an object and forming a replica of it out of tangible darkness.
- The air around Petro is colder than the rest of his immediate environment, and this effect is also somewhat out of his control. If he is upset, the cold aura will grow and the entire room's temperature will drop.
- He can forcefully plunge the room he is in into darkness and render the environment pitch black, even snuffing out artificial lights in the vicinity.
- Petro can easily make his way around in the dark, not by actually seeing in the dark, but by sensing the shapes of the shadows around him and constructing a mental image of his surroundings.
- When in a completely dark area, Petro seems to undergo some physical changes. However, due to the pitch-black environment required for this, nobody has seen what this change looks like. People have only felt the extreme drop in temperature, and heard his slower, more song-like voice and the occasional sound of what sounds like bones cracking and popping when he moves.
- Petro has an ability tied with his bird companion Fate that seems to be some sort of long-distance communication.
- He has also been looking into necromancy as of late, and it seems to be working!
Draw Notes
Petro has crow's feet (wrinkles on the sides of his eyes). He's an old man!
Petro has a tiny beard on his chin, and long and jagged-looking whiskers.
Petro's eyes absorb a lot of light and don't let much out. They should be depicted as dark, i.e. not very shiny or reflecting any strong light.
His ears have a long, specific shape, and are usually pointed upwards.
Petro has spots of pointy fur on his shoulders, elbows, behind his knees, and hips.
Petro has 4 fingers! All Nimnaans have this trait, he must be drawn with 4 fingers. His fingers can be styled either as solid, pointy fingers, or fingers with seperate black claws. Either way, he cannot retract them; they are permanently out.
Petro has smooth, long hair that's combed to the front and to the back. The hair in the back is stained black.
More often than not, when using his powers, his eyes will go completely black and pupiless. His eyes can also go black when he's feeling overstimulated or overloaded, which indicates that he needs to leave the vicinity and spend some time alone.
His tears are black and will leave dark stains on his cheeks. Most of his bodily fluids are also black.
Trivia
There are still many mysteries about darkness and corruption that elude Petro, with a big one being where exactly it comes from. He will find out, don't worry.
Petro is more or less nocturnal. He hates going outside in the day as the sunlight hurts his eyes. Sunlight and strong lights can also render some of his abilities null. Apart from sunlight, Petro also despises blue light for sensory reasons.
He is skilled in many kinds of crafts involving yarns or string - knitting, crochet, sewing, weaving, embroidery, the like.
Petro is the one who makes all the leather jackets for the members of the Saltwater Gang. They are all custom made to fit each person.
Petro loves grapes, often keeping a bowl of them at his home at all times. He prefers purple grapes over the green ones, but he'll take green ones over any kind with seeds (Most likely a sensory issue). He also enjoys wine and will occasionally drink it while spending a moment with Griffus.
Petro loves astronomical events tied to the moon, particularly blood moons.
Were he to ever get married, he would love to have the surname "Umbratica". Griffus sometimes calls him this, usually in private.
