| Personality | Shadowpaw was always drawn towards malice, enjoying mind games, making others uncomfortable, and scaring anybody he could. He was never very strong, so any attempts to physically hurt others tended to backfire. Being more conniving than the others around him led him to believe he was smarter than them, and he longed to prove that perceived superiority. Many of his calculated plots failed to account for the strengths of others, leading to repeated failures, so he was regarded as off-putting and generally harmless by most. Whenever he accurately got a read on a situation, he would assume others did not, and it would fuel his ego. He was generally quiet, usually only talking to his littermates, who he would steer towards participating in his schemes. In truth, Shadowpaw never really cared much for anyone besides himself, aside from a strange fixation on Ravenhaze. He knew what others were meant to be to him, but that mostly only served to validate his actions... so when his father grew distant, instead of feeling hurt, he reveled in the "justification" he had for lashing out at him and his new family. While he would be apathetic, sarcastic, and blunt outright when talking to his peers, he was rarely too viscous so not to drive them away too far, where he couldn't hurt them. He would act subtly creepy towards younger apprentices he didn't think would call him out on it. His lack of regard for others made him hard to ruffle, but he absolutely hated being competed with as it could interfere with his superior self-image. For all his flaws, Shadowpaw did indeed have the potential to be incredibly sharp; he was observant, a quick thinker, and fantastic at mental math. Unfortunately, his inability to believe in the strengths of others led him to miss the areas where he truly excelled. | |
| History | Born in a litter of three, Shadowkit was a somewhat disinterested but content kit. His parents were very attentive to him and his siblings at first, but his dad started to drift early on while his mother kept the kits at her side all of the time. He and his siblings had a very close bond made closer through a mutual resent of their father, his affair partner, and her son, Juncopaw. While Shadowpaw felt the resent, he struggled to feel genuine positive connection, even with his mother and siblings. While there were a lot of other kits his age around, the only cat he ever was interested in was a warrior called Ravenhaze. Ravenhaze had tendencies the other BrookClanners found disturbing and frightening. He imitated his behaviour, much to his mother's discomfort. She even sent Ravenhaze on a quest in a hope to get rid of him. Shadowpaw saw the warrior as a friend, though they never interacted. He was disappointed to get Splashfire as a mentor when Juncopaw got to go with Ravenhaze... even more upset than when Juncopaw 'took' his father. As their father spent more time with Juncopaw, even missing their apprentice ceremony and trying to interfere with his training to get more time with him, Shadowpaw's siblings started wanting to prank him and their father, something Shadowpaw could understand, to some degree. He wanted to hurt them too, but he didn't feel as playful about it. He started to think of ways he could get his revenge. He dismissed Splashfire's training a lot, determining the warrior was more keen on jogging than anything important. After Goosetail's apprentice was injured, he tried to spend more time with Juncopaw, but was soon redirected towards his own children. He tried to act as though he wasn't as absent as they thought he was, but Warblerpaw and Tawnypaw blew up on him, and gave him a run for his money in a 'friendly' spar with Warblerpaw and Tawnypaw's subsequent attack. He insisted he loved them, but none of them bought it. He continued to encourage his siblings to bully Juncopaw, as he enjoyed the misery. He got it in his mind that he wanted to meet with the Place of No Stars, hoping he could learn some forbidden knowledge from them, since he was going to be a bad guy anyway. When his father and Erminestripe realized they were expecting a litter, none of their kids were happy, Juncopaw terrified of how it would be taken out on him, and Shadowpaw's siblings getting into another argument with Goosetail about their hurt feelings Shadowpaw didn't really share. They started to wonder what their mother ever saw in him, and she told them a redacted version of how he was too pathetic for AntlerClan and betrayed them to help her, conveniently leaving out the murders she committed. Right before the gathering, Erminestripe got ill due to her pregnancy and accidentally threw up on Shadowpaw, something he interpreted as semi-intentional. He got it in his mind that he was going to kill her, the baby, and Juncopaw at some point when he thought he could get away with it. The dark forest was bolstering his confidence. Shadowpaw was also being kind of weird in ways his siblings wouldn't detect. He put Fuzzypaw's nest next to his own to watch him sleep, cornered Cicadapaw to see if he could scare her, and once tried to scare Alevinpaw but got beat up, embarrassingly (his attempt to do the same to Finpaw was even more humiliating, the brand new apprentice picking him up with ease). Flypaw caught him dropping a spider on Cicadapaw once but he acted like he didn't. Splasfire tried training him alongside Ravenhaze and Juncopaw to keep his attention, but ultimately would have to tell Froststar his training was going poorly, something Shadowpaw wasn't entirely aware of due to his ego. It should have been obvious he was more interested in watching what others were doing than actually working himself. When Petrelkit was born, only Juncopaw would visit her. Shadowpaw plotted to have his siblings bring Juncopaw to the water, then pull him in and drown him. Knowing they wouldn't agree, but assuming they would be pleasantly surprised, he told them it was only meant to be a prank. When Juncopaw tried to escape them by jumping the brook, Shadowpaw grabbed him and dragged him under. Unfortunately for him, Juncopaw landed a solid blow to his chest, causing him to not only let go, but lose his breath and take in water, drowning himself instead. His family tried to save him to no avail, and he was sent to the place of no stars for his affiliation with them and attempt at murder. He was more upset that his plan backfired than he was about being dead. | |
