Doestep was born to her mother Dapple Tail and father Fleet Stream. Being the only kit that survived in her litter, her mother grew very attached and defensive of her. She was given the name Doekit based on the small speckles she had on her face which resembled fawn spots. She's half-sisters with the leader of her clan, Honey Freckle, and is extremely protective over her despite being younger. Naturally curious and playful from birth, Doestep got along with many members of her clan and at a young age was drawn into the field of healing by the then medicine cat, Petallight. 

She eventually became the medicine cat apprentice and under Petallight's watchful eye, grew into the Clan's new medicine cat. However, shortly after assimilating into her new role, her sister adopted two orphaned kits named Shellkit and Shorekit. Doestep was thrilled at the prospect of having a niece and nephew, vowing to always protect the young ones no matter the cost. However, it wouldn't be long before tragedy would strike the clan. After Shorekit was snatched up in the talons of a hawk, Doestep was among the many to watch in horror as the young one was lifted away from the safety of the camp. Although Honey Freckle was able to dislodge the kit using her powers manipulating water, the fall Shorekit sustained was too much.
