Fender spent much of his childhood lazing about Zachary's mother's apothecary shop since none of the neighborhood kids wanted to hang out with him. Conversely, Zachary (who couldn't leave his mother's shop during working hours) wasted part of his youth ignoring Fender's complaints of "I'm bored" and "It's too hot." Zachary attempted to teach Fender the basics of pharmaceutics in order to kill time, but Fender's short attention span and lack of dedication left him with only a superficial understanding of medicine.

While Fender would like to think of himself as an apothecarist, he is really more of a snakeoil salesman. His potions are placebos at best, and poisons at worst. His "medicines" are typically labeled with a prominent picture of his face, followed by a vague/incomplete list of ingredients. They are usually "all purpose," promising to treat anything from the common cold to baby rashes to animal diseases. His potions tend to taste saccharine, smell fruity, or have excessively high alcohol content. Thankfully, his brews haven't caused significant harm (as far as he knows anyway).

Fender has a genuinely good heart, but he learns best via experimentation, to the misfortune of his patients. Rather than following medicinal texts, he mixes ingredients haphazardly and hopes for the best. He is skilled at marketing, so his potions sell relatively well, but he is still constantly in debt.
