Profile
*(peak human speed) most applicable underwater, especially if wearing flippers, but Ray can still run pretty fast, even if not quite Usain Bolt on dry land.
Ray is a college student studying geography at UC Irvine, with plans to go into surveying. In the end I think he'll end up working for the Parks Department doing environmental work.
He has Waardenburg syndrome type 1 and is severely deaf in his right ear and mildly deaf in his left ear. He normally wears behind-the-ear hearing aids (for amplification), and does not have any kind of cochlear implant. His mother is profoundly deaf in both ears but he has a hearing father (unless I change that, idk).
Lives in Laguna Beach and typically commutes or swims to campus (or as close as possible).
Likes Men.
I was very consciously aware of the similarities to Robbie Reyes when designing Ray, in that they are both Latino and have a white hair streak but (beside the fact that afaik Robbie just bleaches his hair like that to look cool and the heterochromia is like, a spirit of vengeance thing) Ray's appearance is actually slightly inspired by a guy I knew in high school with Waardenburg Syndrome. I decided not to worry too much about Ghost Rider comparisons—I think Ray is pretty different from Robbie anyway, even with the hair streak.
Ray can breathe underwater as well as on dry land, and possesses 5 pairs of gills on his neck. He takes water into his mouth, passes it through the pharnyx, and ejects it out across his gills for gas exchange.
Ray has numerous electroreceptive pores on his face, particularly around his mouth and nose, and can use this to sense electric fields, such as those produced by living beings muscle movements (including heart beats) or the ocean currents under influence from the earth's magnetic field.
This also allows him some geospatial positioning, and he is able to navigate very well even in the dark.
Ray's incisors and canine teeth are exceptionally sharp, his bite force very strong, and he may or may not have a slightly enlarged spleen...
He also has slightly enhanced healing and slightly reduced aging, meaning he has a bit of a baby face and will likely live for a very long time.
He has somewhat enhanced strength in general, and slightly enhanced swimming ability, though he also uses swim fins and a wetsuit with a special surface to assist him in swimming as efficiently as possible. Can swim at speeds of 20-30 mph, generally, and is able to breach the surface to leap into the air.
Not sure about resistance to decompression sickness.
Immune to heavy metal poisoning.
Ray has an enhanced sense of smell, on par with that of a great white shark: able to smell blood in seawater at concentrations of one part per million.
Ray also has somewhat enhanced night vision, though his eyesight is adapted to underwater use and he requires vision correction on dry land.
Hearing unaffected.
Poor vision on dry land/in air due to differences in refractive index between water and air.
Also is partially deaf.
If the water is too too cold or Ray is submerged for too long without adequate insulation (ie a wetsuit) he can be slightly susceptible to hypothermia, though not as much as a normal human.
A wetsuit helps a lot in maintaining his body temperature by insulating him from the water, even if his head and neck are more exposed.
Potentially mistaken for a seal or small and/or juvenile shark or whale.
