Dokyou Honoka

度胸和花 • VA: Ayaka Fukuhara

Overview

An incredibly stoic yet awfully, physically violent woman, who makes even the bravest men quiver in fear. Well known for her ever-present indifference, Honoka’s demeanor presents as reserved, but intimidating, however very deep down lies a cunning and manipulative individual.

As someone who doesn’t express her emotions much, it’s no wonder the pink-haired girl is hard to predict and to read. She maintains a firm demeanor, paving her way towards her goals by any means. Despite appearing outright scary, one can’t deny that there’s a charismatic toughness in a way she carries herself.

Demeanor

Intercommunication

Outside of her antagonistic persona, Honoka is withdrawn from social interactions, detaching herself from the concept of any kind of relationship. A true introvert, staying in her headspace with her own thoughts, gatekeeping them from the world. A woman of few words really, having her impactful presence speak for itself most of the time. And if that fails - she’s more than happy to converse with her fists. A mere glance can make people weak in the knees, so why bother doing more?

Morality

Daring and morally questionable things are entertaining, while any kind of remorse is rarely present. Despite having distorted morals, Honoka is still able to distinguish good from bad. She does as she pleases and does what feels right to her, no matter if the act is deemed controversial. One could say, she’s daring enough to do something the majority would want to do, but don’t due to fear of the consequences.

Sentiment

There’s a weird, unexplained sense of responsibility to keep everyone in their rightful place, making them play their part properly without any distractions that makes the woman do what she does. She doesn’t mind being the person getting dirty, considering getting brutal as “her job”, not wanting to unnecessarily expose other people to sickening-to-the-stomach, gruesome images that she's more than used to. Perhaps it comes from her being the oldest and most experienced in those types of situations, in a way wanting to protect the innocence and ignorance of people around her, for the cost of her own. It’s not something she understands herself very well, but mayhaps it’s something that proves that nothing is black and white.

Design notes

  • Honoka's design was a subconscious inspiration from Draculaura from Monster High.
  • As her story progresses, her eyes turn darker and lose their shine.
  • She has a tiger tattoo on her back. The black highlights in her hair are also meant to refer to a tiger, her motif animal.
  • When she regresses to her "alter ego", her eyes turn pink/red.
  • She has multiple scars all over her body.

Childhood

  • In which the Dokyou twins unfold the truth about their family.

Honoka’s early childhood was a dream come true. Living a very comfortable life, in a loving household. Until around the age of 5, where everything began to change.

Every month or so, a few suspicious men started coming to their house. They never stayed long, only coming in to get what they came for, before turning on their heels and acting like their exchanges never happened. This kept going on for a few more years, with a certain blonde teen appearing now and then. Until Honoka and her brother were 10, they stopped coming completely.

After these “visitations” is where the real issues began to form. Honoka was young, but she wasn’t oblivious. Eavesdropping on her parent’s conversations, she found out that these suspicious men were actually yakuza. Her parents borrowed money from them to establish their family business - The Dokyo Clinic - and paid off their debt only recently. After the last meeting at their front door, both parents started to act off putting. With the dad being home less and less, always saying it’s for a business trip, and with the mother being in her office up until ungodly hours.

One eventful afternoon, where the twins went on a walk with their nanny and their family dog, they bumped into the same blonde yakuza man on a street, after their dog set free from the leash. Honoka went running after Mokka, catching their dog right at his feet. Mortified nanny, who happened to be the clinic worker as well, came to the rescue and quickly yanked the child far away from the culprit.

As twins sat on a bench eating ice cream, one of them asked the babysitter why she was so afraid of that man. She tried to explain it as anyone would to a child: “It was a bad guy, it’s bad to hang around him.”, but the true shock came after a question that a child should never ask:

“But we paid off the debt to the yakuza, right? Why be afraid of them now?”

Utterly horrified and torn, the nanny decided to be honest with the kids and let them in on another family secret - which ultimately was her downfall, and soon enough she was never heard from again.

This ground-breaking piece of truth was the end of an Epilogue, with a horrifying and heartbreaking First Act about to start.

Middle School

  • Living in a cage.

After said incident, the mother became harsher and more strict on her kids. She made them stay home and study for hours to no end, signed them up for unnecessary music classes, forbid them from visiting relatives unless she saw fit, all of this to keep them occupied all the time. She wanted to control them, planning their every action, behavior, looks and words. All of this to keep them shut and not risk the uncomfortable facts to surface.

Kids being kids, they wanted to explore - strict rules didn’t stop them from having fun. Despite putting their best effort into concealing their whatabouts, they always got in trouble. But as kids do, they didn’t listen to their mother. Until one day she got too far with her punishments.

EEven when they abandoned their carefree attitudes and were on their best behavior, their birth-giver still took out her work frustrations on them. No matter what they did, there was always “but” and something that could be done better. And it was pretty frustrating. Not to add, that in spite of being twins, Honoka’s mother was always harder on her, because as an older sibling, though by mere minutes, she was supposed to set a good example for her twin sister.

And she really tried. She let her sister roam free, taking all responsibilities on herself. She involuntarily started taking beatings in her stead, in the belief that this is what she has to do, in order to protect her. But of course, it didn’t work long-term. As years went by, anxiety, terror and hesitation turned into anger, hatred and rebellion.

Such “discipline” really distorted Honoka’s view on relationships, and for a long time she stuck with the mindset that violence is always the answer to any problem.
