ABOUT

A demon librarian of neutral standing amongst demon princes in the bowels of a feudal Hell.

Keeps humanity's shame in their gigantic infernal library in their own territory, where damned souls work office jobs keeping track of every single Human Lie and Atrocity. Volker, once a great angel, willingly cast themselves out of heaven during the angel's revolt. From earth they watched their brethren be cast from the heavens, a rain of burning comets, humanity watching with them with eyes glassy in primitive fear. Volker would later eat their angelic sibling, the keeper of Humanity's Virtue.

Holy things between their teeth

Now, they serve in Hell still serving their original purpose, while casually searching for Virtue's archives to destroy that as well. Though a powerful demon (whose true form, angelic in origin, is rumored to be so terrible its incomprehensible) Volker is far more concerned with the lives of people than they should be. Much of their time is spent on Earth's soil, in the form of an elderly man or woman. They adore people, finding hem not abhorrent but terribly funny, having zero empathy for them and regarding them as playthings. Every toy is precious, but if it breaks, they have billions more. As such they love meddling in their lives, pulling a hundred strings at a time and watching it play out; Volker can see all of their lies, their cruelties, and will spell them out for strangers who usually brush them off as a weird old man or woman. For such a great demon Volker is most of all concerned with having fun. Not evil in nature perhaps, but chaotic most of all.

Is it not fun to tell a child not to lie to their mother, or point out the cheating husband with a mistress? Volker thinks it is. That's not to say Volker cannot be kind; but if you want answers, perhaps start with asking the right questions.

(Meanwhile the damned souls in their libary work as bored clerks sorting the constant flood of lies and cruelties that tick in every second. Volker serves as a conduit, but their clerks do most of the work. The library itself is a liminal space, changing form and size as neccessary, much greater inside than it looks on the outside. It looks like a normal office building overgrown by Hell's living terrible landscape, both on the inside and the outside, a bizarre contrast Volker themselves is the architect of and relates to their love for human life, though it can change to any form Volker wills it to. No matter where on Earth, no matter why or who, a lie and atrocity is committed Volker will know and their clerks will archive it. According to them, they're 'saving it for a special occasion'.)

Their lack of hunger for power scares most demonic princes, who are painfully aware of their ability to sniff out lies like a bloodhound even amongst their demonic brethern. Volker gets involved in no feuds, instead enjoying the terrible overbearing shadow it casts. It would not be the first time a demon tried to overtake them.

Volker has eaten them all.

The library's clerks are humans of all ages, all times of history, and all walks of life. Imagine being stuck in the office in a cubicle- forever. Many of them will slack off for days at a time in boredom, but the appearance of Volker on the floor is usually enough for them to spring back to life. Though boring it is a better alternative than being grafted into a Prince's new tower and used as a living, breathing part of Hell's landscape. The library has their own culture and different levels in the hierarchy, each level their own floor. Volker doesn't keep the closest eye on them.

Humanity's first lie is at the very bottom of the library. The further down you go, the more demonic the library becomes. At the lower levels it truly has become purgatory, and most clerks dare not thread there out of fear for being consumed by the things that roam there or the building itself. It is adviced to go there only with Volker by your side.

Most demons (many of them involuntarily so) side-eye Volker for the fact they, allegedly, cast themselves out of heaven when they saw the chance.

Has a secretary in their library who keeps track of arrangements with other demons, who's exasperated with Volker's tendecy to dissappear. Is one of Volker's only friends.

DESIGN NOTES

  • Often looks suspiciously much like Anthony Hopkins, for which you can blame the artist
  • Can appear in any form but prefers the form of an old human. Always has copper eyes
  • Very stuffy clothing. Old plain cardigans, loafers, you name it
  • True form is incomprehensible, terrible, and decidedly angelic in origin
  • Almost always smiling
  • Pretoogjes :)
