Berry

BERRY, also known as Beryl, was created by a team of scientists who were funded by an unknown entity to create a living chaos emerald. Her genome was extensively altered, and while all projections showed that they would succeed in their goals, her actual development proved them wrong. Nearly all of her rewritten genes were reverted back to normal, apparently due to failsafes present in what was thought to be non-coding DNA. The only intact alteration that the scientists could detect once she was born was that her keratin was replaced with beryl compounds; a purely cosmetic change.

The project used up the majority of its initial grant to create her, and was subsequently stripped of further funding once it was clear that she was a failure. Although she was slated for destruction, a senior member of the project managed to negotiate for her release, and arranged to have her adopted by a distant relative and his husband. Neither she nor her family have any idea of her past; her father lost contact with her rescuer shortly after she came home, and she is simply left with vague recollections of having been in a medical setting when very young.
