The protag explores the forest on a quest's requirement, and you discover this mermaid/ningyo lake city, probably more of a side/secret section, like, completely optional, a patch or something. Freckles lives in it with the mermaids, more of a stray than anyone's pet cat. They're just let free and do what they want. (Almost) everybody loves them, and who wouldn't(the grumpy grandpa they keep trashing the garden of)? They're rather easily scared and run away if a human or animal comes by when they're walking around on land, but they're also super playful! They have fish pals they swim & play with most of the time. Pretty much omnivore, love berries! They're the main reason they go on land in the first place, what they wouldn't do for berries is unknown
Would be fun if they meet this guy at some point, not canon but they're best buds anyway ok
