Francis is an impulsive, opportunistic and success driven strategic thinker who enjoys a challenge though he's easily bored which can make those traits a dangerous mix. He can quickly analyze a situation by running simulations in his head and come up with a workable plan. Will listen to input from his officers as long as what they have to say makes logical sense he'll go with it. He likes order and precision and he can be pedantic and anal (more prominent when he's stressed). He's one of those captains that drills their crews a lot because there's always room for improvement and one day it might give them an edge.
Francis has an uncanny ability to read even the most closed off person like a book, he's very good at figuring out motives and why someone may be acting off. That said, he can at times come off as insensitive when it comes to dealing with other people because he lacks tact. Francis doesn't really understand his own emotions (he's guilty of covers up feelings with aggressive sarcasm rather than dealing with them) and tends to cast them aside to examine at a later time. He strongly values honesty and autonomy.

first impression
Has Resting Bitch Face and the neutral expression of an angry serial killer which can make him seem intimidating which he does use to his advantage. Francis can seem arrogant - he's captain of this ship and damn he'll make sure everyone knows about it.
getting to know him
Not the most open person, it's hard to keep a conversation going with him. Rarely initiates - either he doesn't know what to talk about or it simply doesn't occur to him to do so. Generally content with listening and dropping occasional comments. Gets on best with lively/chatty types.

- MENTAL HEALTH: Nothing to note he's doing pretty well.
- ACCENT: Has a Sussex accent despite growing up in North Kent.
VOICE: Has a stern speaking voice. Gravely and smoke burnished. Very close to how Russel Crowe voices Jack Aubrey in Master and Commander. - COMMAND: Francis took command of HMS Warlock, a 5th Rate frigate in May 1801.
HMS Warlock is a 2-deck 40 gun ship with a full rigged sail plan and crew compliment of 288. Warlock measures 40ft across the beam, 150ft in length and drafts 14ft.
Francis is entitled to 3 Lieutenants but operates with 2 for a while (Owen and Archie) with Jonah being re-assigned to his ship later.
Warlock's work is mainly channel patrol and disrupting enemy shipping (good work for getting prize money) and occasional use as a scout ship. - SPLINTER INJURY: Francis was injured by a 2ft splinter in close action September 1803. The wound never healed properly so he now has iffy balance on his left side and a permanent limp which makes his gait appear mechanical and lumpy. He can move quickly with the limp, even run in short bursts but he can't maintain a fast pace over long distance.
- Francis used to love running, he'd often indulge in long cross country runs when visiting his family so being unable to run like he used to frustrates him endlessly. He has pushed himself and overdone it several times much to his doctor's frustration.
- He's absolutely hopeless at putting names to faces. It can (and does) get awkward for him.
- He's a half decent pianist. This surprises a lot of people but when Francis was growing up his father taught him how to play. He remembers a lot of it very well and does like to play when the opportunity to do so presents it's self. He doesn't get to practice that often so he can be a bit rusty and occasionally slips chords.
- Prone to seasickness. The irony of it would be funny if it wasn't so damn embarrassing.
When Francis feels seasick, he gets fidgety whilst he intently stares at the horizon then suddenly excuses himself for no apparent reason. - Has a really terrible sense of humor, it's very dry and very British. He loves wordplay and (bad) puns. Dad joke extraordinaire.
- Because Francis can't swim his fears are all linked to drowning such as falling into a body of water he can't stand up in, getting washed overboard or his ship getting wrecked. Even deep bodies of water he can stand up in (he classifies "deep" as more than his waist height) make him feel really uncomfortable and panicky.

- Francis's uniform follows the circa 1795-1812 pattern. His epaulet should be on his RIGHT, please don't draw it on his left (as in some old art before I thought to double-check my Age of Sail history book otl). Just to confuse things, I may sometimes draw Francis with 2 epaulets making him Post Captain or as a Lieutenant BUT don't do this unless asked! He's a Captain Under 3 Year's Seniority for a vast majority of his canon and that's how I'd like him drawn in any art I receive.
Cutlass, flintlock and pocket watch are optional props it's up to you if you want to draw them or not however the chain for the pocket watch should always be visible.
Relationships
 | JASPER OH SHIT FEELINGS is probably the best way to describe their relationship. Whilst William had offered a Friends with Benefits situation to stop Jasper being reckless, he hadn't intended to fall in love with the man and ho boy did he fall hard. William's scared of unrequited feelings and completely convinced Jasper's only in it for the sex, even when Jasper stays with him after the war and they end up flat sharing. He doesn't say anything for the longest time until Jasper quietly admits the 3 magic words one night which shocks both of them (it's very emotional). It's a bit rocky sometimes as they learn to compromise with each other and work stuff out but they make it work. William does find it endearing how protective Jasper is even if it has sometimes caused issues. |
